Why is the default answer to any problem with a router from the Verizon customer service geniuses to perform a factory reset on my router?

Because that is the quickest, easiest way to get the router back to a known state and remove any possibly harmful settings that a customer may have added or changed. And keep in mind that the router, as shipped from Verizon, will work for the typical setup that Verizon supports. When you go in and make changes, you are generally going beyond what Verizon does support.
What kind of problems are you having with your router? If you post them here, it is very possible one of the customers here can help you with whatever your issue is.
