Bumping this thread because I am experiencing the same problems with alter.net hubs. The last time this happened was back in July and it just kind of went away after a couple days. Several calls to Verizon did nothing (that I know of).

Now, here we are again, going on day 2 with lag/latency/packet loss issues galore.I did some traceroutes using pingplotter (cool program btw) and verified it is indeed those alter.net hubs. Seems like I get 33-50% packet loss every other trace. I called Verizon, carefully explained what is going on and what I see. They told me everything looks fine on their end and they will send someone out tomorrow to look at it from my end. I already know there is absolutely nothing wrong with my hardware, but if this gets me some face time to go through the issue with a tech who can perhaps call it in to somoene higher up in the tech hierarchy, so be it.

If this continues without resolution I'm just going to have to take action. I'm not going to keep paying for a service where I have slow connectivity to certain websites, laggy gaming, or sound like a robot on VoIP clients. Verizon FiOS is AMAZING... when it works. I shouldn't have to worry about the reliability of a hardwired connection...

EDIT: Wanted to add that I've done many searches on this issue and the results are astonishing. It seems like this crops up all the time with the alter.net hubs. Why? And why isn't it being acknowledged? Why would any company think it wise to leave it alone and let the customers get angry?

Quantum won't help; I have it and I get 500 kbps when I connect to my office which happens to be on Cogent. The points of connection between Cogen and Verizon are often at capacity. Verizon customers pay for bandwidth to watch Netflix and Netflix pays Cogent to deliver that content. Verizon want to get paid for both receipt and delivery of data. IMO they should split the cost of expanding their connection capacity, each expand their own networks as needed, and charge their customers accordingly.

Hey, I have the exact same problem, exact same trace to the exact same switch causing me problems, I do not understand how the techs do not refer this upwards to someone who can actually read a traceroute. It's so odd. It's screwing up a lot of my traffic.

I guess we should ditch FIOS and go with some other provider who can provide the speed that they promised.

Verizon customers are getting most of their Netflix content via Level 3 now and guess what, now Level 3 points are becoming saturated. Level 3 is hardly a discount carrier. I think at this point, Verizon doesn't care what its peering agreements are, even with other tier 1 providers. If you're providing transit or CDN capacity for Netflix, Verizon will discriminate against you in the most legal way possible at the moment - by letting peering points with those transit and CDN providers to become saturated.

Here is what Cogent is saying:

Dear Cogent Customer,

The latency and/or packet loss that you are experiencing to this destination is due to occasional high traffic with Verizon. We have repeatedly requested augments to these congestion points and hope Verizon will comply soon.  While this has been escalated internally to the CEO level, we encourage you to also contact Verizon customer support with your concerns and complaints.  Their delay is a major impediment to internet traffic overall and contrary to net neutrality requirements.  Our peering engineers will continue to address this on a daily basis until resolved.

Typical language.  They want to be still considered peers, but lots of others, not just Verizon, say they are not.  Peers do not have to pay for connection improvements as traffic is balanced, i.e send about as much as they receive.

e,g,  Level 3 cancelled its peering agreement with Cogent for awhile in October before it backed down.  Verizon has not disconnected Cogent like Level 3, but still sticking to its guns about not being peers.

I am having the same issue, right at NYC4.  I cannot stream HD from netflix anymore except at times of super low congestion, like, well, when we're all asleep. To add insult to injury, verizon just upped my internet-only plan 30%. I just ordered the comcast 29/mo 25/5 plan. I'll run them in parallel (I get a month to cancel comcast) and let you guys know, just for fun, before I assume I will pull the plug on verizon --  who really does not seem interested in internet-only customers any more.

thanks for posting on this, I am sure a lot of people are lurking with similar issues. I just cannot see a reason to pay a premium for fios when I am not getting top-notch service. THe retention gal said "you get what you pay for" vis-a-vis cable vs. fiber. I just laughed. yah, ok.

I will not bore you with what fun all this causes with VOIP.  If the retention agent had been halfway nice I probably would have asked for prices on double play, but it was pretty unplesant to talk to them. I look forwrd to cancelling actually I'm lucky I live in an area with 2 ISPs.

I  got  the same problem with my company's  connection.  Speedtest  is  good , I can  go to  almost any sites with good speed except my working place, which is  just   7 miles away ( I live in Hampton roads, VA).  The connection to my company is  too slow to be useful, I used to have Charter Communications with 15Mbps/2Mbps plan, the connection to my company was dramatically faster, now I just got my  Fios installed On  Dec 31, 2013 and found out  the most important connection for me( I do lots of  omputing  home for  office work) is useless, tracert found  the same problem like others describibed here: (my company uses Cox )

what is my option?  can I  cancel  my Fios bundle ( it's a  2year agreement)?  thank  you all for any good sugestions.
