I'm trying to login to open a port but I can not get past the login phase.
When I try to type my password, it shows 4 characters entered instead of 1 for every keystroke. This happens in Mozilla FireFox and Internet Explorer.
I don't know if this makes a difference or not but it is a Westell 9100.

Just ignore the extra characters. That is a rather stupid security step in the router software to prevent someone looking over your shoulder and reading the password as you type. Just look at the keyboard or anywhere other than the screen while you enter the password.

Alright, I think I have to call Verizon then because the password I was given isn't working.

What password were you given? Verizon changed the password scheme within the last year, it should now be the serial number of the router, which you can find on a label on the router.
