Lip Sync with Fios STB (VMS4100)

Hey Verizon,

I have a new Fios TV installation and there is an audio delay issue from the STB when Dolby Digital 5.1 (surround) Audio Format is selected.

Switching to LPCM (stereo) Audio Format fixing the issue but I did not sign for the TV service to hear the channels in stereo on my home theater setup and definitely not to watch them with annoying lip sync issues.

The delay happens in both HDMI and OPTICAL outputs from the STB.

Just to clarify, the audio stream is being sent with a delay and lagging the video stream, which means that the "Audio Delay" function that is common in the various devices can't help.

Please provide a solution and by solution I mean something serious and not the: "replug the power", "reconnect the cables", "try different cables", etc.

Are you going Fios box to TV, then TV ARC to sounndbar or receiver? Did you try Fios box to soundbar or receiver then to TV? Do you get the delay going Fios directly to tv?

I do get the delay when going directly from Fios to TV or Soundbar via hdmi or optical. Once switched to Stereo the delay is gone.

Also, there are other devices connected to the same TV + Soundbar and there is no audio delay issue with them so it's pretty much clear that the delay happens during DD processing in the STB or even higher upstream.

Makes me wonder what audio format is reaching the STB from the ONT 🤔

Supposedly with the latest firmware update there should be a passthrough option in the audio menu. That may do the trick. Problem is the new Fios One boxes convert every signal to DD5.1 regardless of source unless you choose PCM in the service menu. That was why I tried very hard to get the passthrough back in the menu. I have to agree that is the source of the delay in your case, especially if it happens direct to the tv.

What firmware version has the "passthrough" option?

Version 6.8 was supposed to have the passthrough restored as an option.

How the passthrough can be enabled in that version then?

Not sure if it's in the audio menu, or service menu. Haven't gotten the update myself so I'm not sure where you can access it.

How the update is done? Automatically or can be initiated manually?

The updates are initiated on Verizons end. They do them zone by zone until everyone is updated. You can check which version you have in the info in the menu.

Did you check the service menu? Also is it possible to set a negative value in the service menus audio sync menu?

Another quick thought: is your TVs framerate menu set to auto, or is it set to 24fps fixed?

What brand and model TV are you using? Going from Fios box directly into tv?

Just tried all the options in the service menu (pass through, audio delay off, auto..) nothing fixes the lip sync issues with audio set to "auto" or "pass through" and there is no negative audio delay ...

The bottom line - The issue is not fixed in the latest firmware version.

Ok....let's see if we can delay the video by making your TV do some processing. Turn on any video processing you can, to its lowest setting like noise reduction, motion processing, almost anything related to video that can be set to a minimum value. Also did you try a factory reset of the TV? Or try unplugging the fios box and TV, unplug all HDMI cables, let everything sit for 5 minutes. Plug in the system and reconnect devices 1 at a time.

And why would I do that? 🙄

Why should I turn any video processing that I don't want to use just to fix a bug in the Fios box???

There is no point to factory reset the TV as other devices connected to the same TV have no lip sync issues.

Yes, I did try disconnecting the Fios box, switching cables, connecting to different outputs, etc, etc and the bottom line is that nothing resolves the lips sync issue as the Dolby Digital audio stream coming out of the box delayed behind the video.

This a major issue and makes all the customers to make a choice between:

  • Watching the TV with surround sound but also with an annoying lip sync.

OR

  • Watching the TV only in stereo even if they have a surround sound home theater setup and the channel broadcasts in Dolby Digital.

And honestly, in 2020, both options are not a reasonable compromise and Dolby Digital audio without lip sync should be a standard.

There is something with your TV and the Fios box that isn't right. I'm basically at the point of throwing the kitchen sink at the problem because in case you didn't notice,  you are in the overwhelming minority that has seen audio lag from this box. I had one almost since the day they were first released,  and NEVER had the audio issue you are having. I used it with 4 different TVs, 2 different receivers, and numerous bluray players and didn't have this issue. And dont try to say I'm not sensitive enough to it as I worked in the TV production industry for 20 years. Look at this article about a different Samsung model that exhibited the same issue you are having with your TV. It might help, but I seriously doubt the issue is solely the responsibility of the Fios box alone. If so this forum would be flooded with others with the same issue. I suggested a factory reset because perhaps your TV has corrupted the edid information for the fios box in its memory and needs to flush and reset the data. Did you try the Fios box with another TV? Did you try another Fios box? Read this:

  1. Definitely not in the "overwhelming minority". There are many posts here of customers having this issue but unfortunately most of the time the advice is to set an Audio Delay (intentionally or not) ignoring that the issue is the audio behind the video. The issue never gets resolved but magically those posts are marked "Resolved" and/or closed for being too old even if just a couple of months old.

You can also go to www.google.com/search?q=fios+box+lip+sync and find many posts about it on Reddit, RemoteCentral and what not.

I hope this will open your eyes that many customers have this issue.

  2. The links you attached are not "articles" but forum posts and the issue there seems to be similar, just this time it's TV's hardware causing the audio delay and here we're talking about the Fios box hardware. This is exactly the case when "audio passthrough" should help but it seems like the audio passthrough is not working as intended in the Fios box.

  3. Samsung TVs don't pass latency values during the EDID session so it's irrelevant to factory reset the TV.

  4. Are you affiliated with Verizon Fios in some way or just a regular customer?

Just a regular customer trying to help. And I still maintain that you are in the vast minority of people out there with the audio lag issue. Altogether I have seen all kinds of issues in the world of HDMI, seems like despite having rigid standards manufacturers still manage to put there own spin on what is and isn't acceptable. Unfortunately you have one of the most difficult problems to solve, since there are very few TVs out there that allow for a negative audio delay setting, LG being one of them. The posts on the Samsung forum show the issue with several sources, not just Fios boxes, which leads me to believe there is something in the audio processing in your TV that is not following the HDMI specifications 100%. The other devices you use may be more adaptable in their implementation of audio sync connectivity than the Fios box, but like I said, I personally NEVER had this issue, even as an early adopter of the 4100 series. I have only seen you and 1 other person over the last month or so on this forum have audio lag issues, so I can't say its prevalent with the 4100, oddly you BOTH have Samsung TVs. The only other thing I can think of is turning off ANY other audio processing in the TV like dialog enhancement, wide stereo, anything that is intended to enhance the audio. Again I am assuming you are going strictly from the Fios box to the TV, not through any other devices. I don't want to sound like a Fios fanboy by any means, but this is an unusual problem. When you tried the audio passthrough option in the service menu, did you see some channels coming through as stereo? If not the passthrough option is NOT working as it should. As delivered the 4100 converted ALL signals to DD5.1, regardless of source. That was the original reason to get the passthrough option put back into the boxes.

Several people felt the conversion was causing audio distortion, myself included. Like I said , I can't check this myself as I haven't received the 6.8 update. You could try posting the issue here to get a response from a genuine Fios technician.
