RF Technology and new settop boxes

I just had to replace an existing settop box with a new box (IPC1100 P2) only to find that my RF Universal Remote cannot work with the new settop box because verizon has eliminated the built in IR sensors from their settop boxes.  Has anyone experienced this or found a solution??  Needless to say, I'm very disappointed to see that Verizon would eliminate functionality that we have incorporated into other equipment.,

The 1100 series boxes are old tech, pretty much discontinued boxes and are IR only.  The 4100 series boxes are dual mode, and accept IR as well as RF signals from their remotes. The IR sensors were NEVER discontinued.

Thank you.  I'll look into seeing if I can replace the 1100 with the 4100.  Funny how the tech rep I spoke with never mentioned that!
