Sound, but no picture.

Hi, all - I have the Fios TV One STB, a Samsung TV and an Onkyo receiver. My setup was box to receiver through HDMI, receiver to TV through HDMI, and it always worked fine. Recently, the sound would be fine but there would be no picture. I would pull the power, reconnect, and it would be fine. I then developed other problems with the STB so they sent a new one. The picture/no sound problem existed from the start and unplugging doesn't even help. I ran an HDMI directly to the TV and the picture worked, so the STB seems to be fine. I also tested all the receiver inputs and outputs using a Google Chromecast, and everything worked, so I assume the cables and receiver are all good. I've seen other posts about this, and there is apparently a handshake issue and the suggestion was to change the output from the STB to 1080i. I did that, but it didn't help. Technical support had no suggestions other than to run the HDMI
directly to the TV. Anyone have any other suggestions?
Second issue - with the STB connected directly to the TV, I lose my surround sound since that comes from the receiver. I ran an optical cable from the TV to the receiver, and that works. The only problem is that I would like the receiver to be always on, since when the receiver turns on there seems to be a delay for the sound to come through. Unfortunately, programming the TV One remote to control the receiver volume also controls the receiver power. Is there any way to have the remote just control the receiver volume but not the power?
Thanks in advance!

Ok, been through the entire owners manual for your receiver and the only other thing I can see is changing the receiver input to 4:2:2. Other than that, there are several references to "some HDMI sources may not work with this receiver". So I hate to give up, but you may have found one of those devices. I'd still get support to push the APR 7.10 update to you. You never know, it might resolve the issue.

Yeah, one of these days I'll get a 4K TV, but not yet. The Fios is definitely set to 1080i, and I'll confirm that the receiver input and output are as well. Still don't understand why the same setup worked fine for years and this problem started only recently, but has persisted through two different Fios boxes. Because of that, I'm not optimistic that there's anything different about the receiver input and output, but I'll check. In any event, thanks for all of your help- it's above and beyond the call of duty!

I'd bet there was a firmware update for your receiver that happened in the background. Also what version of firmware is the Fios box on? That is the main reason for things that work, suddenly getting broken for seemingly no reason. Either that or a hardware failure.

- That makes perfect sense. The firmware version is KA31.00.06.13alder.c2014638. It’s release apr-6.10 and build number 30.12.

If that's the firmware on the Fios box it's WAY behind. The current firmware is APR 7.10. You need to get in touch with Tech Support and have them push the update to your Fios box.

Wow - that’s good to know. I’ll do that. I also checked the input and output on the receiver but it didn’t have an option to set either to 1080. I’ll get with tech support tomorrow. Thanks once again.

I think the input set option in the Onkyo is here:
Choose the ‘4k60p Setting’ setting you want.
If the TV to be connected using HDMI supports 4K/60p,
you can switch the 4k60p setting in accordance with TV
performance.
1. Select an input terminal that you wish to change
settings using / ̈.
2. Use ©/ª to select ‘4k60p’.
3. Use / ̈ to select the signal to set.
The idea is to NOT choose 4K in the second step, instead see if 1080i is an option.

Unfortunately it’s not an option. The only options are 4:4:4 and 4:2:2.

Did you ever get this fixed? I have a Frontier STB and a Denon receiver b/w the TV and the STB. I had a power outage and started having audio but no video output issue. If I connected my STB directly to the TV, video was showing up fine which ruled out the HDMI cable or the STB. So after I did a microprocessor, reset as they say in the Denon manual, the video appeared through my receiver. The pass thru is working again too.
I just hate having to reset my receiver though because I lose my source names and speaker calibration (based on the room’s seating arrangement)

I have a Denon receiver too and have had to do this on occasion. Seems like firmware updates can cause it too. You could also try powering down the Fios box, the TV and the receiver, disconect the HDMI cables to both receiver and TV. Plug and turn on the TV, Then plug and turn on the receiver. connect HDMI from receiver to TV, then plug in and turn on the Fios box, reconnect HDMI to receiver. That should reset the HDCP chain.
