As was answered over in DSLreports, you can't buy your own Verizon set-top-box.  Any used units you see for sale online were ones that were not returned to Verizon.  Verizon will not activate them.  You must rent Verizon boxes from Verizon.

Your option for non-Verizon set-top-boxes is pretty much TiVO.  You'll have to rent a cable card from Verizon to use it.  Verizon charges a few bucks a month for cable card.

I don't think you'll be able to use the 4100 series boxes as they have to get authorized by Verizon when installed. You might be able to get away with the 7100, but I can't guarantee it. I know it has to be a Verizon box not a box from another provider or it won't work. The 4100 is far more advanced than the 7100, more ram, faster processor, 4K capability, better image processing.
