Wow, ok, how long have these forums been around? I used to be a huge contributor on the Comcast forums before I switched to FiOS. Great to see these active!
My question is this: Does anyone know when Pittsburgh will be getting 1.6.2? Also, is there an easy way to tell what CO I'm out of?
Thanks guys! I look forward to becoming a very active contributor around here! 🙂

You bring up a very good point. If you are using the option to stretch the picture or your TV has the ability to stretch it...it's still going to not look all that good...It wil look fine at original 4:3 but you will get the black bars on the left and right side of the screen.

For the people who are on 1.6.2 and still say SD looks bad...you aren't stretching the picture are you? My wife hates watching SD tv with the picture stretched because of the quality.

I zoom sometimes, but usually just view SD at 4:3. I hate stretch because everything is too fat. These different settings do not make a big difference in PQ to me however. My HD box just provides a very poor, blurry picture on SD channels, period. Do you want to know what makes a difference? If I take the cheap FiOS digital adapter ($4 a month) RF-output and hook it up to with a coax to my TV on channel 3. Now the picture is much sharper, quite watchable, and does not give me a headache. On channels with scrolls or movie credits the letters are actually readable. This is the ONLY way I can watch WeatherScan local.
I would really like to have a Verizon STB that provides a good SD and HD picture like Comcast. Yes the HD picture may be a little better with FiOS, but the SD doesn’t come close to Comcast. If the VHO4 update on 3/31 doesn’t work I guess I’ll take the 7xxx STB route? I dread calling customer service and trying to get that done. Someone from Verizon e-mailed me 8-10 months ago saying that a soon-to-be-released STB MAY fix the SD PQ issue, but that a firmware update in the fall (2008) should definitely fix-it. Obviously the firmware update didn’t work. Solitaire was the higher priority. I wish someone from Verizon would give me a follow-up call or e-mail.

Jetpeak,
I just got my update also. Pretty much no improvement in SD quality as you and many others have observed. I am using an HDMI hookup, but I'd be surprised if using component helps. The reason I say that is that when I had comcast, I used both HDMI and component and PQ was the same (excellent). I may experiment, but bottom line is that I now don't have a spare component hookup on my TV and it shouldn't make a difference anyway. I can't believe Verizon couldn't get this right. My question to you: what did you say to Verizon that made them willing to come and switch boxes for you? My impression from other comments in this forum was that unless your box was broken, they wouldn't replace it. Maybe we can just define "broken" as lousy SD PQ.

Hi Larry when i talked to tech support this week i told them i had this problem sinse last october after upgrade to hd 6416 stb
i reported it then and it was suggested to wait for 1.6.1 fix which never happened as i said in last post i did receive 1.6.2 which has no fix the tech had me changing wires to try different hookups tried running coax directly from wall to tv no go
then he did a diagnostic through box he said that box seemed ok .thats when i mentioned fios forumns telling him that this issue is a nation wide problem and if it doesnt get resolved i will be switching back to cox cable he then said well try a 7216 box which im scheduled to get this saturday. he also said some tv,s have had issue with handshake protocol. which i dont accept at least not with my sony bravia sony tech support reaffirmed that my tv was not the problem. it all comes down to how good a signal tv is receiving from verizon so thats where im at now ill find out this sat. and will report to forumn how i make out .
thanks jetpeak

I live in Staten Island, NY and I just wanted to report that I am very happy with the 1.6.2 fix. I was concerned that the "HUB" error would never be resolved. After watching many shows in my bedroom I can say that the problem no longer exsists. Just resolving that problem is a huge upgrade in my eyes. Another thing I did notice on my HD set in my main room was that the SD ch's have improved a great deal. The SD ch's always were pretty good on my garbage sets, but on my HD tv they were very blurry. Now I noticed a sharper detail to all the Sd ch's. I still don't watch them....HD is all I am worried about. Thanks Verizon.
NOW PLEASE WORK ON THE GUIDE!!

Glad to hear of your results. I have not used the remote DVR features so I never had the issue. Wondering what set top box you are using with the SD results.

I received the 1.6.2 update in So. Cal on 4/14 as scheduled. I am now getting a 2-3 second loss of audio and video when watching HD programs. This happens randomly about once every 2 hours. I have reset the STB with the same results. Anybody else have this 'feature' ????

Yup. Not regular (like every two hours) more random, and it is just with the video streams (HDMI...) Since My TV uses the HDMI, I loose sound too. But if I am using my stereo (SPDIF Optical) then the audio is OK. It is an output issue only (some others have reported this as well, at least on other forums). If you hit rewind you will see what you were missing.

Me too (Southern Calif update to 1.6.2 on 4/14/09); same problem (loss of signal for 2-3 seconds) but not as frequently as every 2 hours. Also tonight, I was watching a recording (on a 7216) and pressed the "stop" botton; lost hdmi connectivety for about one minute after which the signal returned with the appropriate screen image from the 'stop' command. The stb indicated it was 'on' (and recording another program) while there was no video or audio at the monitor or A/V receiver during the one minute outage.
But so far, for the first 3 days at least, I haven't been getting my 8 second recorded programs as under 1.6.0!
Louis
