Verizon gives you the remotes when you have service or receive new boxes. Other cable companies give them to you for free, but when service ends they want them back. Since you own the Verizon ones, you are responsible for any replacements. You can get remotes far cheaper on ebay or even get a logitech remote which is far better then the outdated Verizon ones.
The TOS covers remote replacements.
Verizon used to allow 1-2 free remotes a year for customers, but unfortunatly people took advantage of it and abused it.
You can thank all of those that abused the free replacements for having to pay now. Under some circumstances though you can get a free remote under the customer service section of the dvr menu.

I've heard of this policy from a co-worked who actually cancelled on principal.. wonder how many others did that.. I think the 1 or 2 remotes a year is fair enough.

I don't epect them to pay for the ones I lose, though you would think they would do something but welcome to the FIOS TV nightmare. I found them pretty cheap on ebay.

I found it remarkable that they wanted to charge me for a new remote to replace one of their that failed.
I pretty much have had all the remotes fail, went out and bought cheap universal ones that work like a charm.
But seriously???

Last I tried its still possible to get them free. Try ordering one from the stb and see if they are asking for a fee. But just don't ask for one too often. They were getting some asking for ones all the time and then probably turning around and offering them on eBay.
