External Hard Drive for DVR?

I notice on my Verizon FIOS DVR (Motorola QIP6416-2) that there are IEEE1394, Ethernet and USB ports.  Can any of these be used for increased DVR Storage capacity?

Hello thoff,

Just FYI, I am reaching out to someone here at Verizon to answer your set top box, USB questions.  Stay tuned....

The 6416 DVR current firmware does not support an external hard drive.  Supposedly the new 7216 may have this capability enabled.  But, for now the answer is none of these ports are supported.

Status is that they are available and out in the Verizon customers houses. There are no new features right now, but next year they are rumored to support ESATA external HD's and MPEG4 compression.

I'm a new FIOS customer, as of today.  They installed the 7216 DVR, but I was told the ESATA device connection would require advanced data features which aren't available yet.

The 6416 from Motorola absolutely supports the addition of an external drive (I verified on Motorola's website). Verizon's firmware disables those interfaces. The question for Verizon is why are the interfaces disabled? All we want is larger recording capacities - what's the issue with providing that capability???? A response from Verizon would be most appreciated.

There is a issue with the DRM that the DVR puts on the files. That is why Verizon disabled the drivers in the firmware. They and Motorola are working on correcting the issue. At least that's what I have read.

Motorola says no such thing.  Motorola says they offer an eSATA connection to support external drive expansion.  And they do.  But they don't support it yet with a functional driver that meets the needs of multichannel providers.  As a result, no provider offers eSATA expansion for Motorola DVRs.

Hi! Wanted to share with everyone what I was able to find out:

Verizon does not currently support the ability to activate or deactivate ports or unadvertised features on Verizon provided set top boxes, by end users. Any customized settings as such will invalidate any and all warranties, and Verizon retains the right and ability to reset set top boxes to their original settings and feature set any time, and without notice.

However, the Verizon QIP7216 DVR set top box includes an eSATA port which is planned to be enabled in a future release of our Interactive Media Guide.

Thank You!

When it's enabled it's supposed to be esata.

I found out that Keyboards and JohnA are correct.  Thank you, both, for your answers.  Much appreciated.

Not sure what the answer was to the question about adding an External Hard Drive to the QIP6416-2 unit.  Can you hook one up via USB, FireWire or SATA?  Does it need a firmware upgrade? Sorry if repeating questions, but I got a little confused from the prior posts.  Thanks for any help.

I have the 7216 unit, all three of these ports are purposely disabled by verizon's firmware.

I had to go out and buy a REAL DVR (tivo) because of this.

They should have just put duct tape over all three ports since they are more than likely NEVER going to be enabled.

Would have saved me a lot of time going to the store and buying drives and returning them.

Have been told by someone within Verizon, with knowledge, who says they expect to go live with Esata external drive capability on the 7216 shortly after 1st of year. Would not give exact time frame. but I do trust him.

What about those poor saps (i.e. me) who have the 6416 box?  Do we get to swap out for the 7216?  Please?  Pretty please?  Verizon (Kathleen), are you listening?..... Bueller?... Bueller?
