Turned off the cell service and the app reported it did not have an internet connection, even though the phone was connected to wifi.
Left the phone alone for a few hours and it started working.

I assume you are trying while on home WiFi?
That WiFi is one the same network as stb?
And you used same login for app as on your account?

I am on my home wifi.
I am connected to the wifi network from the verizon router.
The login is the same. When I click on My Account ... I can see my bill and everything in the My Fios app.
Can I connect to the set top box in the living room.. what is the ip address?
The smartphone ip is 192.168.1.5
The router is using wep security. Is that a problem?

which I am able to ping from my laptop...
