I recently updated from a standard definition to high definition box with a DVR. It is making a noise. Sounds like a disk drive is running constantly. Is this normal?
Thanks

well the DVR does have a hard drive... and a cooling fan
it will likely be more audible than the standard boxes
but if it is abnormally loud/annoying, contact Tech support to have it replaced

My DVRs do the same. The hard-drive keeps spinning even when you turn it off. #greenFAIL

My STB is doing something similar. It's not just the normal sound of a hard drive and fan, it's a continuous series of clicks and chirps. The noises may be what you hear when it's first turning on and getting set up, but this goes on all the time. If this were the box in my bedroom it would be making me insane, as it is, it is merely annoying.
This isn't normal, right? I've already had to return one defective box, should I reasonably hope a replacement would not have this issue?

Clicking and Chirping usually indicates that the hard drive is failing. Time to replace it before it fails altogether.
