IMG 1.7 Experience

As of this morning, Tuesday 9/29/2009, the new 1.7 level of the IMG is available in North Texas (and I presume also Calfornia). I thought perhaps it might be a good idea to have one thread where we can identify new, improved, or fixed items in the IMG.

I have not yet had time to really explore and see what is new, but here is what I know so far:

1) The level is 1.7 Build 09.82

2) It is on both my SD and HD STBs, although it took a call to the FSC and some time before it appeared on the HD DVR.

3) The STBs were left powered on last night, they were powered off after the update.

4) My Favorites survived the update intact.

5) My recordings on the DVR survived the update intact.

6) The Guide is still in 4:3 format, displaying 90 minutes of programming, don't really see any changes yet.

7) VOD works, seems to be slighter faster starting up, but that may be my imagination.

😎 I don't notice any changes to the Widgets, although I rarely use any of them.

That's about it for now. Hopefully others will chime in with their experience.

Does anyone have any idea how many months Verizon has been working to resolve the HDMI issue?

Who else is part of the STB reboot party since getting IMG 1.7?

Ever since IMG 1.7 my two QIP2500-3 require an online reset, In Home Agent reboot, or an unplugging every ~24 hours or they lose the IMG data, Widgets, and VOD. They both show valid IP addresses, the DHCP lease isn't expired, and all other internet connected devices in the home are fine.

Over on DSL Forums in the Verizon Direct forum one VZ tech said Level-II support has isolated the issue, but it may require a hot fix to repair it. How many others are affected? It's a bit annoying. 😕

The issue persists with 2500s losing connectivity every 24 hours for numerous people. As I understand it Verizon Level-II support is aware of the issue and it will require a hot-fix, but it would be nice to get a confirmation here and a possible ETA of resolution.

When does WNY get this update? I spoke to the Verizon tech (via the phone) on 12-30-09 and she was clueless, She thought we already had it (I still have version 1.6.2) She also stated that you did not have to have either digital voice or the option with voice mail capabilities. She stated that you just had to be a subscriber of Verizon landlines service and have fiber optic service to your house!! That is what she said (several times actually). Again, I have had this service since its inception in this are (about a year) and am totally unimpressed with all aspects (TV, Broadband, Cell Service and their overpriced and under optioned landlines service) of their products.

Is anyone seeing problems with the 1.7 release with Tivo's not recording the right channel?   Until the winter, my Tivo has never had a problem changing channel and recording.   Now, some time this winter, it suddenly started missing a channel, or skipping to an adjacent channel.   It seems it might be to do with this new software update, but I wonder are others seeing this?  Is there anything we can do about it?

IMG 1.7 has absolutely nothing to do with TIVO.  It is the version of the firmware that the Verizon supplied Motorola STBs use for guide display and operation.  If you are missing channels or skippinjg channels, then the probelm is either in the TIVO or with the programming of the cable card (which is not related to the IMG in any way, shape, or form).  If it consistently skips the same channels it is most likely something with the cable card.  If it is inconsistent, then it is most likely a problem with the TIVO.

@Keyboards - actually no, that's not true.   There's widely reported issues with both Comcast and Verizon's updates to their STB software causing problems with Tivo's changing channels.   The issue is that these updates push new program info every hour on the hour, which keeps the STB's CPU (they're not very powerful PCU's) very busy and unable to accept other inputs at the same time this is happening.   I'm pretty certain this is now happening with the 1.7 update.   You can try it yourself - see if you can manually change channel exactly on the hour - I can't, the channel display gets messed up and you usually arrive at an unintended channel - you can actually see the numbers not being input correctly.   At any other time, it's fine.   The only way around this that Tivo users have found is to start recordings one minute earlier and stop recording one minute later, which allows things to work as intended.

Anyway, my post was to ask were others seeing this?

I've been reluctant to post this to the 1.7 feedback thread since it's such a minor thing, but since I mentioned this recently in another post I will do so here as well for completion. I have noticed that if I shutdown the STB overnight while on a SD channel, next day upon activation the picture is stretched along with the info banner side to side. The SD override is confirmed "off". If I switch to a true HD channel and back to a SD channel, everything is reset as it should be in proper 4:3. This does not happen if I shutdown on an HD channel as everything wakes up normally. The hookup is direct STB to TV via HDMI. As I said, minor. Thank you.

Pittsburgh got the 1.7 update today. My QIP 7100 is now in a 16:9 guide while the older one is not. On Demand seems faster loading along with the widgets. One thing those is now on my 7100, the dvi message keeps showing up. It will connect and show picture but its about a 15 second delay from the TV and STB both powered on.

Sarasota, Florida reecived 1.7  a couple of days ago.

We have  QIP6416 P2 and were hoping that 1.7 would allow us to connect to our Panasonic TV with HDMI... but still can't.

Have to use component.

Otherwise everything else appears as normail - haven't really noticed any differences to speak of.

I got the 1.7 IMG last night and haven't had a whole lot of time to play with it. One thing I noticed was certain channels started getting all pixelated.  It wasn't every channel, just a group of them.  Very weird.

I'll test more tonight to see what's going on.

Also, the stretched guide looks ugly.

After successfully using HDMI with IMG 1.7 for the last month, the HDMI handshake once again appears to be raising it's ugly head. I usually turn on the TV and STB first thing in the morning for a few minutes while I have coffee, just to see if the World is where I left it. I am now getting the blank screen/good sound issue. A hard power recycle restores normal operation. I will check  my TV manufacturer for any firmware updates, and I will try a different HDMI slot on the TV. I will not rant against HDMI as I wish to do, but a Google search reveals that there is just so much wrong with it - especially as an industry standard. Sometimes the simplest change in a system, like the input or the cable itself, may rectify things. Component cables plus audio are the final fallback. BTW, HDMI 1.4 is the new standard for the new 3-D experience - oh good, no telling what that will do to  us now. Thank you.

VHO12 got the update 2 days ago. As reported by others, still getting the DVI error message and it still takes 15-20 seconds for tv control to start. SO the handshake issue not resolved. I have noticed some new stuff though, added settings that have reported by Justin.

Also noticed a change to the guide. When you scroll to a show it now has a red NEW visible in the guide. Which is nice. Now I dont have to hit info to see if a show is new or not. Also noticed in the main DVR menu, they changed the  color of the space indcator to blue from white.

I will play around with it more in the next few days to see what else I notice.

IMG 1.7 SEEMS to have fixed my handshake problems, fingers crossed.  Had the set on for several hours without problems.  I just might keep FIOS Smiley Happy

I've had a few days with IMG 1.7 and I have to say that my initial impression of the stretched guide data has been tempered.  It's not as bad as I originally thought, it's fine.

The guide IMG does seem a bit quicker than before, but overall I haven't noticed a ton of changes (Jump To Live TV, expanded guide data). Am I missing anything?

I haven't had any pixelating issues since, so I have no idea what was going on with Cinemax channels the other day. All appears to be well.

BTW, there is a blog post on changes to FiOS TV IMG and DVRs here: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-at-Home/FiOS-TV-We-Hear-You/ba-p/153005

My biggest pet peeves have been brought up, but I'm sure others have constructive criticism or questions.

How can I get 1.7?

I have 1.6 and have some odd problems, so I am hoping 1.7 fixes them.  Maybe my STB is bad?

Sometimes I get audio out of sync.  Using pause/play sometimes fixes this.  Or rewind,FF.

Sometimes I get choppy video, live of recorded.  Unplugging power for 10 seconds fixes this.

Almost never, but sometime the show gets pixellated if whilewatching live I hit pause then play.  If I then hit record and watch from the recorded copy, same results.  If I change channels a few times and go back, it is normal.  I know this is not a signal problem because it only happens when I go from live to pause or rewind then watch from there.

It crashed once.  I think it rebooted without my help, but not sure anymore.

It seems to work better it I pull the power for 10 seconds every day or so.  Must be Winblows based?  On that subject, anyone know what OS is in the thing?

Thanks.

Help. Just got the IMG 1.7 upgrade. We have a QIP-7216 and not only is the Guide text stretched now, the Closed Captions are stretched! I tried going to the On-Screen menu setup and all seems same. Is there a fix for this?

If what you describe is what I think it is, then IMG 1.7 did stretch the banner and guide info. IMG 1.7 is paving the way for a true widescreen guide at some point in the future, so what we see now (on 7216 boxes) is a stretched version of the old guide. It's temporary until the new one is available. Thank you.

IMG 1.7 is a monumental failure in my house.

STB: QIP7216 with Home Media enabled

TV: Insignia NS-LCD26A connected via HDMI

Problem: Once I turn off the STB and TV, the STB goes into an endless reboot loop:

- Turn off TV and STB

- After ~15 seconds, the STB's front display shows all 8s
- After ~5 seconds, front display goes blank with blinking orange light near the top center of the display (above and slightly left of the record light)
- This Light blinks for  ~10 seconds and I hear the power converter (I assume) click and the unit turns totally off
- After ~10 seconds I hear the power converter click and the display shows all dashes momentarily and then 8s again and the process repeats... and repeats... and repeats.... and repeats....   you get the idea.

When it is in the reboot loop, scheduled recordings are not executed (no surprise, it's rebooting constantly) and the unit is not accessible via the FiOS TV Central Website (again no surprise).

Attempted troubleshooting fixes:

- Unplugged the STB for 15 seconds -- didn't fix anything

- Rebooted the STB via In-Home agent - didn't fix anything

- Unplugged the STB for 1 minute - didn't fix anything

- Called support, walked through automated troubleshooting and effectively repeated the process - didn't fix anything

- Used Chat Support who did an 'intrusive reboot' which would erase all settings, recordings, etc -- didn't fix anything

Doing some basic troubleshooting on my own, and discussing this on the FiOS forums at DSLReports, this seems to be a HDMI issue -- I am NOT the only one having the EXACT same issue. Some notes:

- If the STB is turned off, but the TV is left on, no issues

- If the STB and TV are off and I unplug the HDMI cable from the TV, no issues

Just finished with chat support, sending me a new box. Also, whatever they did screwed up my HD channels... ARGH (EDIT, Double ARGH, everything but the local stations are not working). We'll see if it is a software or hardware problem by Wednesday -- unless of course, UPS gets scared off by a few inches of snow!

Any chance I can downgrade back to 1.6??????  PRETTY PLEASE????
