As you probably already know, IMG 1.9 is starting to roll out. FiOS TV's Joe Ambeault posted release notes that may just answer quite a few of your questions. (And here's a link to the press release as well.)
I see that several of you have already started posting about IMG 1.9. Great! We'd love to have a central place to refer people, so we'll be moving IMG posts over to FiOS TV Technical Assistance. That way things are together and you won't have to search as much to find what you're looking for.
Please feel free to post here with your observations, feedback and questions. I'm sure others will chime in to help with questions if they've already run across the answers you're looking for. And it'll save duplicated efforts as well.

Since Verizon doesn't read posts here, and didn't give me any sort of response via their 'feedback' links, I decide to post something about the eSata FAQ/I<G 1.9 issue to the 'Idea Exchange'. Go here to vote to get the issue raised, since Verizon reps actually read that forum (as far as I'm aware, anyway):

Thanks!

What you fail to understand is the fact that renting and leasing are two totally different business concepts. For example, after 3 years on a standard car lease, you can choose to pay the residual and own the car for as long as you want to keep it, and thus stop making payments. However, with the STBs we keep paying FOREVER even after the original cost is recouped by Verizon, and the value has depreciated to zero. After 3 years of renting a STB through Verizon at $20 per month, I will have paid $720, which is definitely more than the upfront cost to purchase a new one. Bottom line, this is a money making strategy for most providers because most people don't read these forums, nor do they know enough to want to upgrade.
I would definitely like to have the new STB, but I refuse to shell out an extra $40 as a matter of principal.

I wanted a bigger hard drive.
Verizon says for $40 I can have one right now.
It's worth $40 to me.
I pay $40.
I get my bigger hard drive.
I'm happy.
Verizon's happy.
Please explain to me what ANY of this has to do with ANYTHING about the difference between renting and leasing. Nothing.

Did you even read my post that showed how to get it for free?
People who pay for things they don't have to only encourage companies to perpetuate predatory marketing practices. If customers took a stand, they'd likely abandon those practtices as ineffectual.

@alden wrote:It seems to me that by choosing to create new IMG 1.9 by themselves Verizon wanted to save money and show that they can write software as specialized software companies can. Well, we all see results here. Verizon don't have enough expertise and knowledge for writing complicated software and they made strategical maistake with 1.9. I bet that Verizon will end up by spending more money on development 1.9 by themselves rather then hire outside software company. DirectTV and Dish did exactly that and result is very good - reliable, good IMG nobody complaining about.
Alex
Just for your information Verizon also wrote 1.8 by themselves, so this is not their first foray into doing the IMG.
Not saying they are perfect as they also had issues with the 1.8 release.

Why you are suprised? This is THE Verizon for God sakes, the only thing Verizon people care is profits and their big bonuses. IMG 1.9 may or may not bring them new customers, so they not in a hurry to roll it out.

I think the slow introduction is actually a good indication that VZ is listening. If not, we would get the update as is and with no recourse. And the right time for correction is up front, not later after the coders have put it out of their minds. MS introduced their screen themes a few years ago amidst complaints about the low screen contrast and pastel colors. The complaints went unheeded to this day. I see indication that this very same complaint is getting some ear at VZ. Good for them.

From what I understand, the eSata port unlocks with IMG 1.9 on the 7232. Will there be tech specs or suggestions for what drives can and can't be used?

So far the only drives that Verizon has listed are the WD MyBook DVR Expanders of 500GB and 1TB. They say that in order to work fully any drive will require a 100 Mb throughput rate as well as no sleep mode.
Supp[osedly any drive will work, but if there are problems, VZ support will not help if your drive isn't on "the list".

I called up to try to get my dvr's upgraded to the 7000 series (most 1.9 features need the 7000 series - and, I am also hoping, will be much faster on 7000 series as the lag on the 6400 series is very bad) and was told I needed to wait (I did sign up some time ago - was told I needed to wait another month or so despite the fact that since 1.9 I am having issues with playback of recorded programs that they can't figure out, so I was also hoping to upgrade to 7000 series to see if that would potentially fix that issue)
The one big thing I dislike about verizon over comcast, is with comcast I could go to the store 5 minutes away, and they were ALWAYS willing to upgrade my boxes to the latest boxes - no questions asked. A much simplier and better approach to verizon's. I consider myself a big verizon customer (phone, internet, cellular, and tv - and I have 6 boxes at that) (total monthly bill approaching $400) - but don't really feel appreciated. Comcast seemed always willing to do whatever they needed to keep my happy.

When do you get the new release? Does it go by states? Do they send a message telling you your getting the upgrade?Or is it just automatic.

It's automatic and there is usually no advance notice.

I doubt that anyone, including anybody in Verizon, really knows for sure at this time. And for sure they won't tell us. If you know your VHO, you might find some information in one of the following threads:
http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Meet-The-Expert/Time-line-for-Roll-Out-of-IMG-1-9/td-p/303529
http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Meet-The-Expert/Rollout-Schedule-by-VHO/td-p/303525
When you read these you will see that the rollout will apparently be smallest to largest VHO, over an unspecified period of time, from weeks to months.
I suspect all you can do is sit back, relax, enjoy (or cuss) what you have now, and anticipate what is coming.....

Hi Todd, I'm in NE NJ, VHO 7. If you're in VHO 7 we're in the middle of the pack of the Verizon upgrade schedule.

Joe A. advised in the on-line forum that the Tampa area (VHO2) is at the beginning of the rollout plan for 1.9. If we're next after the initial rollout and if the plan was to rollout to another market every two weeks or so, then that would have been this past week. But we didn't get it yet. No biggie. Just info for others who are waiting and are later in the rollout. I'll post once we receive it to give others an idea of how long it might be.

I just added FiOS TV service, and one of the reasons was the ability to add an external eSATA drive to increase recording capacity. I've just discovered that I need IMG 1.9 to get support for the external drive, but I can't find out anything about the timing of the roll-out of IMG 1.9 in the northern VA area. Can anyone point me to any kind of schedule or expectation for the roll-out in my area?

As has been said in this thread a dozen times:
The release of 1.9 is currently on hold!! No time frame or location schecule has been released nor is likely to be released.
