IMG 1.9 release notes and discussion thread

As you probably already know, IMG 1.9 is starting to roll out. FiOS TV's Joe Ambeault posted release notes that may just answer quite a few of your questions. (And here's a link to the press release as well.)

I see that several of you have already started posting about IMG 1.9. Great! We'd love to have a central place to refer people, so we'll be moving IMG posts over to FiOS TV Technical Assistance. That way things are together and you won't have to search as much to find what you're looking for.

Please feel free to post here with your observations, feedback and questions. I'm sure others will chime in to help with questions if they've already run across the answers you're looking for. And it'll save duplicated efforts as well.

It is jprobably just me, but I can't think of any good reason to pay $40 to get hold of a box that you have to RENT for a monthly fee. Why not just give them back their OUTDATED Box and NOT pay for it for a few months.  I'm sure they will then be glad to give you a NEW box for free so they can again start charging you $20 a month for it.

=============================================================================

Because I don't want to go without a DVR for a few months and there's no guaranty what NEW box they'll give you when you upgrade again.

If it makes sense to you, to spend $40 to aquire a rental box that you have to pay $20 a month for, then fine.  It doesn't make sense to me and I have every right to say so.  Now I'm done!

So, you are entitled to your opinion. But, have you ever leased anything.. like a car? You don't just get next years model because they are availble a year after you started the lease. .. or an apartment? They don't move you into a newer apartment because they built them across the street from where you are leasing your current apartment. If they offer you a 'deal' to upgrade to the latest car or the newest apartment, it will come with a surcharge of some sort.

You are comapring apples and oranges. Yes I have had leases and they were ALL for a FIXED Term.  Car Lease usually 3 years, Apartment usually for 1 or 2 years.  Anyone wanting to break or change a lease during the TERM, usually had to pay a penalty to the Lease Holder.  Comon Business practice.

This is NOT the case with FIOS Boxes.  You use & pay for the box month to month there is NO LEASE and NO Fixed Term and you do NOT pay a penalty when turning one in.  You can keep it for as long as you are willing to pay for it.  You can likewise turn it in whenever you like.  I have turned in boxes and picked up new boxes and I never paid a peanalty to do so.

Dude, I gave you very good reasons for doing what I did, so drop it already. You're a genius for getting around paying $40, we get it.

I wanted a bigger hard drive.

Verizon says for $40 I can have one right now.

It's worth $40 to me.

I pay $40.

I get my bigger hard drive.

I'm happy.

Verizon's happy.

Please explain to me what ANY of this has to do with ANYTHING about the difference between renting and leasing. Nothing.

Did you even read my post that showed how to get it for free?

People who pay for things they don't have to only encourage companies to perpetuate predatory marketing practices.  If customers took a stand, they'd likely abandon those practtices as ineffectual.

What you fail to understand is the fact that renting and leasing are two totally different business concepts. For example, after 3 years on a standard car lease, you can choose to pay the residual and own the car for as long as you want to keep it, and thus stop making payments.  However, with the STBs we keep paying FOREVER even after the original cost is recouped by Verizon, and the value has depreciated to zero. After 3 years of renting a STB through Verizon at $20 per month, I will have paid $720, which is definitely more than the upfront cost to purchase a new one. Bottom line, this is a money making strategy for most providers because most people don't read these forums, nor do they know enough to want to upgrade.

I would definitely like to have the new STB, but I refuse to shell out an extra $40 as a matter of principal.

Since Verizon doesn't read posts here, and didn't give me any sort of response via their 'feedback' links, I decide to post something about the eSata FAQ/I<G 1.9 issue to the 'Idea Exchange'. Go here to vote to get the issue raised, since Verizon reps actually read that forum (as far as I'm aware, anyway):

Thanks!

Actually Susan, people here should understand that paying a fee to rent equipment is unnecessary and unwise.  There is another solution that worked for me.

Specifically, I reported pixellation issues to tech support and when they sent a tech, free of charge, I got the upgraded DVR.  More details are explained in this thread:

Apparently not.  Since 1.9 is on hold, THERE ARE NO RELEASE NOTES.  So all we have left is the discussion we're engaged in.

I became a new FIOS TV customer on June 3rd and got two Cisco DVRs model CHS 435 HDC.  They have ver 1.9 sw loaded.  Tech says new customers are getting Cisco boxes and existing customers get upgraded to Motorola 7212.  I see an active menu item to add an external drive (as expected with v1.9).  I seem to be missing an expected feature of 1.9.  Only one DVR can be the multimedia DVR and it can't share with the other DVR.  It can only share with the set top box.

Any one know if this is unique to Cisco DVR?  I see menu items for multiple DVRs but can't use them yet.  Is this coming soon?

When I signed up I told them I would only do so if I got the "new" DVR.  The rep on the phone checked and said that the depot that serviced my area (near philadelphia) had the new DVRs so I could get one.  I thought it would be Motorola but the tech showed up with Cisco.  The tech working out of this depot said he is installing Cisco for new customers only.  He was not installing Cisco for old customers.  Probably speaks to the interoperability issue you mention.  This also doesn't mean all new customers get Cisco, I'm sure it's based on availability.

My neighbor was having trouble with his DVR (motorola 6000 series) and he tells me it got replaced with a black Motorola with a lot more capacity.  He didn't know the model number.  I didn't mean to suggest all old customers were getting upgraded.

Can't answer your questions regarding the Cisco and multi-room as they are omnly being distributed in limited areas, but need to correct several errors in your post.

First, not all areas are getting Cisco boxes as there is an issue of interoperability between Motorola boxes and Cisco boxes in the same home.

Secondly, exisitng customers are getting ugraded to a Motorola 7232 only on request and many new customers are getting the same Motorola DVR (7232).

I can't find the email now to check the file name, I must have deleted it. I'll just keep my fingers crossed it's a 7232 when it get's here.

If you have previously answered this I apologize, but where are you located? Verizon is using the Cisco boxes only in a very limited area. I am confidant that you will be getting the Motorola 7232 DVR, that is what the $40 offer was for. You can go here to view the various Verizon STBs and download the User manuals, but here is a snapshot of the two different DVRs, Motorola and Cisco:

I took advantage of the $40 offer and got the 7232. I don't think you need to be worrying. And by the way, the 7232 is a very nice DVR, works very well for me.

If that is indeed what I get, can I keep my 7216 (return standard HD box) and cross-watch between them and record on both?

Eventually. Again, currently it depends on where you are located. If you are in the areas where Verizon has already delivered the 1.9 version of the IMG, then you will be able to record on either DVR and watch on either. But for most of us, 1.9 has not yet been made available, so we can have multiple DVRs, and record on each, but we cannot view material recorded on one DVR on another DVR.

You can check to see which level of the IMG you have:

Menu ==> Settings ==> System Information ==> the release number is the first entry displayed

If it is a Cisco box it will get 1.9.  But it is true it will not play well if you have Motorola boxes.
