New FiOS menu colors?

Hello all,

I woke up this morning and noticed that my DVR was resetting.  After it reset, I noticed that the colors in all of the FiOS menus had changed from a light blue/gray and bright colors to very dark/"musty" colors.  It, quite frankly, looks awful.

Has anyone experienced the same?  I loved the look of the new menu that rolled out last fall.  This color change looks downright awful, and is much tougher to read.

Yes, they upgraded the IMG to 1.9.1 in VH07 and VH08 last night. The darker color is 100000% better than that light blue (which I and most people hated). I don't find it tough to read at all. Still I wish they allowed us to pick our own color scheme like Comcast did. But still I find this to be an improvement.

Thanks for the reply.  After I wrote this post, I did look up my software version and Googled it.

For me, it looks like I'm looking at the guide with a pair of thick sunglasses on.  I never did get the distaste for the 1.9 guide.  It's colors were perfect, especially if one's TV is properly calibrated.  Now, I can understand the issue for those who like their TVs bright as all get out ala how TVs are most often displayed at big box retailers.  However, a properly calibrated TV displayed the guide with perfect (for me) contrast between writting and background, images, etc.  There was absolutely no issue with viewing or reading anything on the screen.

I agree the new menu colors they just rolled out today  are very hard on the eyes; hard to read. 

The previous version was much more legible to read and easy on the eyes.

Anyway Verizon can you please adjust the darkness?  I never had an issue reading the previous menu.

These colors are so dark and dreary and hard on the eyes.

I actually love the new darker colors.  Everything is so much clearer.  The letters are brighter. 

This upgrade was mentioned in the "Message Center."  I check it once a week as the messages always tell you when upgrades and/or maintenance are going to occur.

I don't know how you can think the letters are brighter...on a TV I've never have a problem displaying 'white' on, the letters look gray (on the guide)

@AlphaB:  I wish my guide looked like that (still)...That's basically what my old guide looked like.

These are the colors for my new guide:  (Sorry about the pictures, the Galaxy Nexus doesn't take the greatest pics).  That blue/black color on the info bar is awful.  And even these pictures look "too bright" and are not that bright in reality.  But you can see what "white" looks like on the Sportscenter lineup bar, compared to the "grayish" color used for text on the info bar.

This color is not the same blue, as your guide...No matter how my TV is calibrated.  Although I did get my "calibrated" settings off avsforum.com for my specific TV.  (They were calibrated professionally by someone else for their home/lighting situation, but they are still alot better then the factory settings)

I'm wondering if the "colors" has anything to do with the model type of the TVs? 

I have 2 Toshiba's.  The "colors" look like the 2nd photo I posted.  However, in checking the 1 Sony tv I have, the "colors" looks exactly like your 2nd photo!

The Toshiba's are self calibrating.  On the Sony I have to manually calibrate.  Tried as I might, I couldn't get the guide "colors" to match the Toshibas.

re: Calibration (since I brought it up)...

Every television is slightly different than the next, in the same way that no two snowflakes or fingerprints are the same.  And, we are talking TV sets, not makes and models, but every individual TV.  The reason is that TVs are made with bins of parts, and the parts all have slight variance in terms of the colors, power, etc.  For that very reason, taking someone's settings from a random forum for, lets say a Samsung LN40D630, and applying them to your very own LN40D630 is sort of like taking the forecast in Calfornia and expecting it to apply to you in NYC.  The only thing positives that those settings that you find on forums probably do is 1) turn off pre-sets such as dynamic picture that warp what the picture was designed to look like and 2) turn brightness (which actually controls black levels) way down and turn backlights way down (both of which are commonly waay too high - and, in fairness, come that way from the manufacturer).  Doing those simply things will make any picture look better.  However, in order to get a truly accurate picture, one needs to do an ISF Calibration (typically a $300-400, 3-4 hour job), in which a calibrator uses $10-15,000 worth of equipment to take all sorts of measurements from your TV and fine tune your picture by going into the backdoor service menu.  Still, one can get a much "true-er" picture than the blue tinted, bight beyond belief picture that 1) big box retailers put on display and 2) are standard pre-sets from the factories by using something like the Disney WOW disc, or the AVS 709 free disc, and taking some time to read through what all of the settings actually mean.

AlphaB: I am absolutely intrigued and a bit jealous of your new theme lol. Would you mind letting me know what model box you're getting that nice light blue theme on and what state your in and anything else you might think is important. I would really appreciate it. This new guide color is awful and I would love to figure out why you have a nice different one. Even your channels on the left are in black when mine are white and a few other differences besides the obvious color difference. Thanks for any help

Oh ok...maybe the 7232 and 7216 and 6416 got the ugly colors and your model got the nice colors. Ah well. Thanks for the input

I was told by a Verizon tech (who was at a neighbor house) that my boxes are an older version & asked if I wanted the upgraded smaller newer version boxes.  He had extras in his truck.  Then he stated that I would be charged a few extra dollers for the upgraded smaller boxes.   I told him no as I never had any issues with my older versions.  Besides, I am not being charged for my "old" boxes.

I absolutely hate the new colors because they are hard to distinguish between the different stations.

Why was this not brought up to vote by the users before you people make a unilateral decision??

I want the choice given back to me what colors are suitable not some programmer who thinks 'It Looks Cool'.  It doesn't look good at all.

With the money I have to pay for the services I would at least expect to receive some consideration of my opinion on something that may seem like a 'small thing' to you people but to me is important!

Unless you are a Verizon manager or executive you can't fire anyone at Verizon.  All you can do cancel your service and tell Verizon why you canceled.

I also find it very hard to read the menu now with all the content being squeezed into the new screen, including the gaudy colors. There is so much going on with the enlarged channel box, the animated channel picture on the right, the over bright colors on each line which causes my eyes to ache. Advertising on the bottom of the screen, new advertising top left of the screen, what a mess.

Give us a choice!

I would like the old menu back or a menu option allowing me to pick the old one.

I also am displeased with the revised FiOS Guide. The colors are terrible, and the contrast with the text makes it even more ugly! I do not understand how the software developers come up with these schemes...in all major software program development, and that's what is occurring within FiOS, there should be some sort of beta testing with actual consumers. And the feedback must be seriously considered before launch.

I do notthink Verizon gives their customers any amount of consideration when launching something as new as the FiOS Guide

@Bobbo527: Sorry but I truly disagree, the new colors are AWFUL.  What is this dark blue/black color they decided on? The light blue looked so much better on my TV.  I wish they gave an option of a Light theme and a Dark theme at least. 

@cxg331: "Properly calibrated TV" - I'm guessing you have a Plasma also?  Yeah this change must have been made for the people who believe overly bright LED TVs look better then a realistic looking picture.
