I recently upgraded to FiOS 2GB internet service. While I was not informed prior to installation, the installation tech informed me that the new service would require I "upgrade" to the latest FiOS TV equipment. Apparently this meant also changing from my prior TV One service to TV+, a derivation of Stream TV.
Well I am not a fan of the new service. First, it's Android TV based. Second, it's Android TV based and third, it's Android TV based.
Google now controls everything. The worst is the search function. The search function is now unusable. Search results delivery Youtube content. You cannot search the TV listings. If I search for Top Chef, using either text or voice, I am presented with a list of available Top Chef clips on Youtube.
Gone are features like
- One button access to the Last Viewed rail.
- I can no longer use my LG TV's Magic Remote to change channels.
- I can no longer "Scroll By Favorites". In the past if I had my Guide filtered to my Favorites, scrolling through the channels while watching TV also scrolled by my favorites. This is no longer the case.
- Google Assistant can control my TV but not the FiOS STB. I can turn it on and off, control the volume but I cannot change channels.
These are just a few of the issues I have with the new Android TV system. Given the marginal improvement provided by the 2GB internet service, If I knew about the TV "upgrade" I would have said no thank you!
