Problems with Cable Box and Audio/Video Amp

Hello All
I am having persistent problems interfacing my Verison Set Top box and my Sony audio/video amp. Often if I switch the amp to other devices (eg DVD player), I lose the audio when I switch back to the cable box. I have to reboot the entire system to get the audio back. When I spoke to a Verizon tech about it, he seemed aware of the problem but was unable to offer a solution. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
