Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

Dear Verizon Customers,

Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention. We are listening to you and based on your feedback, we have made SOME additional changes to the new Fios TV Interface with the APR 7.8 update. Here are the interface updates:

  • User Interface Improvements
    • Guide legibility improvements
    • Free To Me filter renamed to Subscribed
    • Episode font size updated to fit more characters
    • 2 ½ hour guide skipping with prev/next buttons

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

Totally agree.  I can't think of one positive to this update.

Text is too small in guide and info bars, even in standard def.  Display fewer rows to allot space for larger text.

Restore chaptering.  Disabling it was the worst mistake.  The DVR help option says chaptering is still available, but there is no option to enable it.

The B/W guide is not as convenient as the color coded one was.

The "poster" in the upper left of the guide is useless.  Return that box to live tv so the current program can still be visually followed while using the guide.

The skip right button used to shift by a whole page width in the guide, now it does nothing.

In short, the previous software was very good.  It was the reason I switched from Optimum.  You ruined it.  Instead of trying to ram it down the throats of users, or say they'll get used to it, roll it back.  You tried to fix a nonexistent problem, and ruined the experience, instead.  There are so many poor features that trying to fix them individually is a waste of time.  Just dig out the old software and reinstall it to rollback this disaster of an upgrade.

Obviously, many, many users feel as I do.  The IT guys who pitched this "upgrade" to management, as a good idea, should have the decency to admit their errors and roll it back, or be replaced.  Come on Verizon Management.  Do your job and comply with this public outcry.

We apologize for any inconvenience this update may have caused. Our release products go through testing sessions with customers just like you before the products are launched. The feedback you have provided has been shared with the team for further analysis.

We appreciate all your feedback.

Don't apologize for your boneheaded mistakes, roll it back.  It really was far better before your"upgrade"

I agree, hurts my eyes

Agree, hard to read and follow.  Colors were very nice...easy to find sports, etc. P-i-P in upper left corner was great.  MUST have it back.  Thank you!

I agree.  The new update is terrible.  I’d rather have the old one back.  I can hardly read the guide!

The new guide is incredibly slow, unresponsive and took away features. It is absolutely terrible and there is no way to go back to the old. Fix this mess!

So where is the solution?  the first post is exactly the problems I'm having and it states SOLUTION, SOLVED - so I click that and get an apology, no solution, not solved - just a "sorry we screwed you over with the New Guide/DVR updates".   It's horrible, my husband is all but XFinity bound.  Anyway you all are really going to fix these problems or are we stuck with this?

Geep1

Agree 100%. It is terrible!

Don't apologize for this deplorable "upgrade."  Just restore the old guide which worked far better.  The ability to see one channel by second click was the feature I used the most.

Why is this an accepted solution? An acceptable solution would be to roll this menu update back. I've been considering Comcast and this feels like the last straw/the right time!  XFINITY!

No, not solved. the new guide still sucks and is unusable. Roll it back.

This is really a WORTHLESS boilerplate response to a number of previously loyal FIOS customers (I have 3 boxes and every single premium channel) who are about ready for XFINITY.  I am calling them tomorrow to start discussing pricing etc.

Sorry but a standard corporate apology means nothing, action is needed, and the action needs to be a rollback to the previous menu/guide system.

BTW, when you say your products "go through testing sessions with customers just like you", you are wrong. If your testers were actually just like us, they would have reacted just like us and told you that the new menu is a serious downgrade from the previous one due to loss of essential functionality and visual usefulness. Maybe your "testers" were not familiar with the old guide in which case they were not in a position to provide truly useful feedback. I cannot imagine even one current FiOS user who would consider the new system an improvement in any way whatsoever, other than the fact that it's very good at **bleep** off your real customers.

Admit your upgrade was a mistake and bring back the old menu and guide. Thanks in advance because if you have any knowledge of statistical sampling can extrapolate the real number of angry customers based on how many are complaining here in the forum, and you know it is a HUGE number.

New guide is harder to read. The channel number and Network is also difficult to read compared to previous version.

What does this mean? Do you folks realize what a disaster you've created?!? I can't read it - formatting is horrid! This could be the straw that breaks this camel's back, both personal and business.  Customer Retention,  expect my call soon if this mess isn't fixed.

Yes, I created this link only to post here & am tweeting from my biz acct. Who in the hell beta tested this **bleep**? Your cable TV service is hanging by a thread as it is, just behind landlines 🙄🤔

Signed, Get it together

Worst "upgrade " in the history of FIOS. Those who approved this be demoted.

YAY!! It's solved. Please provide the date that the old guide will be restored. If you cannot provide the date, then uncheck the solved box until it is truly solved. BTW, your statement is obviously inaccurate. If testing was done with customers like us, you would've realized it was not an acceptable upgrade. None of the "just like you" customers on here approve. What is the count now, about 400 negative comments? As another poster suggested, extrapolate that with the number of people not taking the time to post. To mark this "solved" is very much disingenuous. Not to mention an insult to all those who took the time to provide the feedback you so much appreciate.

This new format suck for those with bad eyes, it hard to see, way to small for my eyes.  We should have been given the option to keep the old guide, we pay for this it should have been our choice
