Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

Is this a tactic to "encourage" existing customers to move up to a 4K box ( where these guide problems will "magically" not exist or be fixed) ???     Hmmmm.

Where is the  "I love the new guide" posts...said no Verizon Fios customer ever.

REVERT BACK TO THE OLD GUIDE OR I AM GOING TO A COMPETITOR!  IT IS COMPLETELY UNUSABLE!

This new UI update is bad beyond belief. I press the guide button and it can take up to 4 seconds for the guide to appear. Changing channels is not instantaneous. And the info bar with all the useless settings, when doing a channel change the info bar at bottom of screen which I had set for 2 seconds stays for almost 7 seconds. And now, that setting to change the duration is not even available in the Menu anymore. It just disappeared. When watching a news channel with a chyron scrolling, if I missed something I press the button to go back 10 seconds and the info bar appears blocking what I am trying to see, so I am force to press the go back button 3 times. I shouldn't have to go back 30 seconds when all I need is 10 second return.

I cannot imagine a UI any worse than what this new UI update offers. Infuriating! Actually this update has removed practical and useful options with junk. More in this case is not better.

I have been with Verizon and Verizon FiOS from day one. I am so sick of this kluge of an interface I am seriously considering a move to Xfinity. Every time I pick up the remote to select something the aggravation meter shoots to the top. I know Verizon will not change this for the better. This pig is staying and I will most likely be leaving.

I agree with all the negative comments so far. This new guide is terrible!!! If this isn't fixed in the next week, I'm officially changing providers. My contract is up and I can't deal with this guide. The old color scheme is soooo much better, never mind the lag and delay you get with every function now. Revert back!!

So disappointed with FIOS new guide.

too large type at the bottom when on a channel

Channels and number too small on the guide.

guide point size is too large and the PIP feature that enabled you to watch what was airing on a channel while you view guide is gone.

for some reason VeriOn thought it would be ok to have whatever you were watching playing in the background behind the guide.

very disappointing update made to the guide.

The new guide is terrible as so many others have stated, my husband has not stopped complaining about it since the roll-out

It makes watching TV stressful and these days having more stress is not what we need.

We've taken to watching more Netflix just to avoid using the Fios guide and I don't need Fios to watch Netflix

Who was the brain-trust that came up with this design?  It is cumbersome, confusing and just confusing.  I can definitively say, if people are frustrated when trying to find something to watch, or tuning to something, or moving around within the system, PEOPLE WILL NOT WATCH.  I FINALLY JUST TURNED IT OFF.  My next step is CANCELING FIOS and going with something like Youtube TV or Hulu.

I concur!

This new menu is Very confusion!

I'm actually ANGRY at it.

All black, can't distinguish what is a movie or show.

Who came up with this?  And what manager approved it?  And the VP who pushed it to production?

No way they tested this and said "I love it!'

Absolute Foolish!

“Guide Too Small” it’s not resolved. As paying customers we need the option to customize the font size. If we can change the font size on computer screens and order books in a larger Font then this same option needs to be available for the Fios TV guide. I left Verizon many years ago for this reason. I returned a couple months ago. The guide size was smaller than xfinity but readable. Now, just two months later I have the same issue again. THE GUIDE FONT IS TOO SMALL, can’t read the channel numbers, too much is crammed on the screen, and no ability to change what’s been pushed to my TV. I pay for service and should have a voice in how I am serviced. Fix the problem!!! It’s not solved.

53 pages of unhappy customers! HELLO! ANYONE AT VERIZON READING THIS??? We all pay them plenty every month! Are they planning on keeping any of us happy? Tv is unwatchable with this new guide! So what are they collecting money for???

The new guide is terrible.  Very hard to know what channel your on. I miss the channel logo on the left hand side along with he color code for movies, sports and shows. Should allow the option to make changes to the guide to suite how the user wants to view/receive information.

Just a god awful update, Verizon.  Way to completely slow down switching channels and the use of DVR.  My goodness, please make it OPTIONAL or just DON'T DO IT AT ALL.

TMM21

This latest guide update is TERRIBLE and I just cannot believe that Verizon tested this with anyone who would think this is better than the previous guide.

The program name is hard to see because the episode is so large.

The black and white guide is hard to read.

The information about a program is not with the program name. Doesn't show if it is a new program or show an air date.

If you press the info button, you can't go back to the guide.

Etc....

Go back to the old guide PLEASE !!!!!!

Googled “new Fios update sucks” and found this thread. 100 % agree with everyone. The pause and fast forward is horrible now. Just turning on the tv and getting this splash screen to turn off is a pain. Changing the channel have to do it a couple times to get to the one I want. All around awful design and they should definitely change it back. I’ve been wanting to cancel Fios for some time now and if this update remains think it’s time to switch.

Completely agree.  I had been thinking of dropping Fios TV for AT&T TV NOW.  This update threw me over.

Oh Verizon, why did you "fix" something that wasn't broken?? The new guide is terrible. If you're trying to be just like Comcast you've succeeded, because your guide now looks and functions exactly like Comcast's bloated and inefficient one. You've utterly killed the readability and ease of use of your guide. Why did you eliminate the color coding!!?? Why did you eliminate the live-TV display in the upper corner that appeared when using the guide? Why did you eliminate the ability to skip several hours ahead at the press of a button to see the schedule for later? In essence, why did you make any changes AT ALL to a guide that was well designed and functionally excellent? The negative reactions on this thread summarize it perfectly: you really blew it with this unasked for and wholly unnecessary update. Perusing the new guide has now become a difficult and laborious chore. Very, very disappointing.

Whoever QA'd this disaster should be fired on the spot.

- The interface is TOO BUSY. Even though the text is now bigger it's easy to get distracted with all the other stuff going on in the UI.

- Get rid of the picture preview, it's so unnecessary and takes up over 25% of the info bar.

- Get rid of the "Up Next" on the info bar, makes the UI too busy and confusing, use that room to expand on the show you're watching. If someone really cares about what's next, THEY'LL OPEN THE GUIDE.

- PUT BACK COLOR CODING FOR SHOW TYPE. This was *the* best feature of the fios guide taken away for the monolithic mess.

- Provide a way to get rid of the tips. Literally every day I get a new tip when I've already seen it and "okay" it.

- I hope its just remote lag, but FIX IT. My fear is that it's not remote lag, but you are saturating the available working RAM in these older Quantum boxes to the point that they can't keep up. The VMS is the fastest box and its SECONDS OF DELAYS when entering in remote commands. COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE. I see what you're doing, you're trying to make the UI nice and informative like today's streaming boxes, but you're doing it on 10 YEAR OLD TECHNOLOGY, IT'S NOT GOING TO WORK.

Verizon better fix this, or I better get a free upgrade to Fios One, I'm not paying a cent since I don't have 4K TV's. I just want a remote and guide that works (and I'm sure it does on those faster boxes). Otherwise I'm ditching the service. What good is it if its a frustrating experience every time I pickup the fios remote.

Is this all about "encouraging" current customers to upgrade to FIOS ONE?  I'm thinking it is! Verizon could not have rolled out this hot mess without SOME KIND of a plan.  Verizon...... it backfired!! This is one long time customer who IS now looking at other options.

You have about 546 NEGATIVE responses to the NEW GUIDE........maybe someone in your offices should take a look and see what YOUR customers are saying.  Sure, this is only a small number, but enough customers that took the time to comment.

I believe that the NEW GUIDE is extremely hard to read, lacks the colors to assist with programming, also lacks the P in P in the upper left corner so you can still watch your program while looking at the guide, AND when pressing the "LAST" button it is slow to respond.  These are just a few of the issues I have found with the new guide.

Read YOUR customers comments so far and then decide.  I am confident that you will agree with what we are saying.  Verizon is a leader in the industry, what happened with this redesign of the guide?  Please, someone re-review these changes immediately........thanks!!

Completely agree with all the post and comments about the new guide.  I'm considering going to the evil Comcast as a result of the new guide.  I hope they revert to the old one quick so I don't have to take that drastic step.
