Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

I can no longer select my subscribed channels. Tried  Free to me. That worked for a couple of days, then the setting just stopped working on its own, and it gives me everything weed through. Why was subscribed channels removed? My last seen doesn't work, even going into settings and clicking thru to selecting it to ON. Channel selection delays. This guide is user unfriendly. Some things are better left alone.

I agree with all said.  In fact I am seriously considering cancelling Verizon and going to YouTube TV

Let’s look on the bright side: since the new guide says “free-to-me”, I guess I’ll never have to pay another verizon bill!

Although, even if it was free, I’d still hate the new guide/dvr experience....

”ROLL IT BACK! ROLL IT BACK! ROLL IT BACK!”

The guide is horrible

Agree with all posts on this subject.  Here are the worst changes for us:

1.  No chaptering for DVRed programs.  Why???  No the up arrow doesn’t appear to do anything now.
2.  The huge overlay when you skip ahead/back telling us we are skipping ahead or back and coming up when pausing or pretty much everything else.  Why does it stay on the screen so long?  I have to scramble for the Exit button every time to get it off the screen quicker.  Please, if you don’t want to redesign it then just give us a setting to disable this banner. Please!

3.   When we *do* want the overlay banner to come up so we can look ahead on the same channel to see what is coming on later we can only look ahead a few hours now.  We used to be able to look ahead up to a week.  Now we’re forced to us the big guide for this.

I also dislike the new guide.  There are all the extra channels again that I don't get.  I can't filter by subscribed like I could on the old guide.

I just wanted to ad a kudo but it would even let me do that! I hate the new guide too!  Im a clicker through the channels so not being able to filter for subscribed only  is awefull !!!

If you like to just channel surf, this interface makes that impossible. Before you could click through channels and see what's on, stopping where you want. Now, you need to be 100% focused just to understand what the captions are showing you. And by the way, when I channel surf I'm interested in what's on right now -- NOT the next three shows also. Way, way too cluttered and over-thought. This is a horrible system.

I actually just created an account so I could agree with your post and everyone else's. In one fell swoop they managed to take away pretty much everything functional and replace it with stuff no one wanted or needed. No PIP of current show, the landscape view makes the network names so tiny you can't read them, the crowded bars clip the show titles so you can't even read them. Every singe part of this update is completely useless and ANNOYING. I don't even want to watch anything because I have to navigate this nightmare. Congratulations - we now have pretty much the same format from every cable TV onscreen guide from 1993 again plus lag and useless "enhancements". Thank you for adding even more fail to 2020.

Also just found that if you are watching a show on DVR, open the guide to try to search for programs in the future it only goes out 3 days. Not only does the slowness to load the guide not let you see future shows, but it kicks you out of the dvr show you are watching. Happened to me 3 times.

Guess we can just add this update to the list of unwanted bad things to happen in 2020...

I agree with everything mentioned in these posts. It's hard to believe that chaptering  was removed without adding a suitable alternative. The program information is displayed forever each fast forward/reverse and t's driving me crazy. Please, please add something to allow us to turn it off or decrease the display time.

The new guide is terrible.  It acts so slow and is not very responsive.  It is frustrating and my family hates it. It is difficult to find things on the guide. Too much information slows the guide down.  I think I might have to look at what Cox cable has now.

The new guide is horrible.  I use to find sports or movies so quickly because they were colored coded, not now.  Way too much information on a black screen.  When I want to select 'last' on the remote it takes forever to show the programs.  When you select the guide you can no longer see the show you were waiting in the upper left corner.  And who really cares if there is a picture of the show that is highlighted in the guide.  And the banner at the bottom?  Worthless.  Maybe it's time to go to YouTube tv.  Cheaper and functions much better.

Created an account just so I can agree with everyone. This new update and guide is TERRIBLE. Verizon... why? This update is frustrating and I wish so badly I could go back to the old guide. It is frustrating enough to start looking at COX. Please please please go back to the old guide.

I agree. I miss not seeing the channel logos next to the number. Plus it’s so slow.

The new guide is a total disaster. It is extremely intrusive when trying to scroll through channels. It slows down the scroll function then takes up half the screen with information to small to read unless one is within 10 feet of the screen and remains on the screen for an eternity.
In my opinion the old guide was working quite well and did not need to be fixed, especially with this awful mess. I want my old guide back.
It was helpful without being intrusive when scrolling. It was much nicer to look at when used and you could still see the program you were watching when using the guide.
Sorry Verizon but in my opinion this new guide makes one wonder if you are trying to drive customers away.

Does Verizon actually read and respond to these complaints?

This new guide is TERRIBLE.  Why have a video background option if you can't see the video in the background?  The "Last" feature now takes forever to load up and use.

Please bring back the old guide.  I can't imagine anyone thinking this new guide is an upgrade.

Totally agree. This is a HUGE miss for them. It's like they didn't consult any UI/UX experts at all with this. Not sure how it is "more" helpful at all. Not even close.
