Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

The lag is awful.  It seems to lag on channel input too.  When entering a 3 digit channel, the middle number doesn't get in half the time.  For example, click "570 enter". Fios slowly brings up channel 57.  Try again.  Fios shows channel 5.

This update is garbage

Read "Welcome to your new viewing experience"  it's so ridiculous.

I thought it was just me! I do not like this new guide. It is too hard to read; too small and too busy. And the color coded lines are missing and I miss the option to switch between the different guide views. I agree with everything you all are saying. Looks likes it’s time to switch back to Comcast/xfinity!!

Please allow an option to NOT show the info bar at the bottom of the screen when using DVR fast forward and reverse 30 sec controls. This is SO annoying. I just want to skip back or ahead without needing to know what channel I am on or what I am watching. Many time I watch NFL games on my DVR and hit > to move ahead 30 sec after each play to the next play. Now the info banner comes on and I can't see the game info.  8>((((

Another person here that sighed up to say how terrible this new update is. Roll it back!

Agreed 1000% - it's horrible.  It seems like ever time we turn on the TV and get to the guide, a pop-up comes up telling us how great the new guide is.  Here's what I hate about the guide so far:

  • Unreadable.  Horrible font and color choice.  Gray on black with a high contrast white font.  Compared to the old guide, this one looks like it was designed 20 years ago in MS Paint
  • No live TV inset and when you do bring it up it takes half the screen.
  • No color coding of channels by content
  • Stupid icons for shows that force show titles to be truncated... Icons are too **bleep** small even on a 76" TV to be useful.
  • Last button is slow and laggy to bring up a list of channels.  I click last, I want the last channel.  Period.
  • Even on a brand new install with presumably the latest STBs it's slow and laggy.  You'd think this is the last thing VZ would want.
  • Transparent overlay with moving stuff behind the menu makes it very hard to read.
  • Channel icons are not consistent - some are easy to read, others are impossible to see what channel it is.
  • Hard to find clock (if there even is one).  You removed the clock from the STB and then hide it in the guide.
  • DVR info bars can't be turned off and remain as an overlay for 10 seconds every time you fast forward or rewind.
  • No chaptering on recordings.

Any screenwriters out there?

A bunch of executives from NOZIREV are placed in a real-life reboot of the Saw franchise.  Complete 15 tasks with the new guide or else.  Ready, set, start the clock.  Heck make it a Reality Series!

Or do a campaign style parody:  I'm President of NOZIREV and I'm here to show you our latest improvements to your viewing experience.

Excellent summary Steve!

Maybe we could get a dozen top contributors to ZOOM w the VZ Team and discuss this disaster in a thoughtful manner... Yeah, right when Heck freezes over!    By now is anybody fooled into believing that VZ is a normal, customer conscience company that responds constructively to a New Tylenol-level debacle?

The NEW Guide is absolutely terrible.  It's harder to see the shows and everything is BLACK!!!!  There used to be different colors to show movies, sports, etc.  When I click on a show to see who is in it, I can't get back to the GUIDE.  I have to go out and back in and then find my spot again!

I do hope they go back to the way it was before!  It was so nice and EASY!!!!!

The new GUIDE is terrible.  It is all black which is actually confusing.  There used to be color coding for movies, sports,  etc.  That really helped.

When you click on a future movie to see who is in it, you can't get back to the GUIDE.

Please help your customers and do something about this awful new GUIDE.

Thank you.

This upgrade is far less than that. Nothing is working properly and I was just trying to scroll through to get to the end since I didn't see it. It would not scroll through to the end and it doesn't finish to the end.

It takes too long to have a number from a channel to come up and the guide goes to that channel. (Change from 506 to 740 - you click on the 7 then 4 and finally 0 and it will not place the last # and go to 74)

There also was a change for a 10 minute interval to the end of the show and that doesn't work anymore.

This entire guide needs to be put back to what it was before as soon as possible. You should ask customers about it first.

Frustrated!!!

I am not sure why this thread says that it is solved, far from it.  The new upgrade has caused a number of issues

  1. remote is very sluggish on everything, turning channels, pausing, trying to get the guide, you name it
  2. The guide is very hard to read, miss the color coding of sports, movies etc.
  3. Why in the world would you remove the ability to use chapters on DVR tapings.  This was something that was a huge improvement on other providers and a reason I never switched to Comcast.
  4. When using the last button you now have to go through more clicks instead of just one
  5. it used to be if you tuned into a show after it already started, you could press record and the whole show would record including the minutes you missed, now it only records from when you pressed record. In addition, you could also rewind a show you came in the middle of and watch the entire show even if you tuned in late. Now you can’t even do that.  THIS WAS HUGE and one reason another reason I never switched to Comcast.

It really does not make good business sense to take away features, ones that I am sure Verizon knows people use and if you can't maybe you should have taken a survey of your customers before you got rid of features.   Please bring  these features back

The new Fios Guide, VOD and DVR are HORRIBLE. It is difficult to navigate. It is slow. It is cumbersome.  It is absolutely AWFUL. Please change back to the previous format ASAP.

Verizon seems to think this is the greatest update and makes searching for shows FASTER??!!!! It seems most of us are having trouble even reading the guide, I have to get up & stand in front of a large screen TV - how is that faster?  I still can't believe they removed some of the best features they had, being able to record the entire show or start from the beginning if you came in late, chaptering for DVR replays, even setting reminders takes longer for the same show for each day, you used to be able to scroll down, set and it would return to the day/time you were on, now it goes back to the 1st show and you have to scroll over the ones you already set to get to the next.  AND THE LIST GOES ON . . . .

If they think it will get better with time, they’re wrong. It’s been two weeks and I grow to hate it more every day.  I can’t read the channels or program descriptions on my 65” TV, sitting 8 feet away.  All college football games are listed only as “college football,” with no immediate indication who is playing. In order to figure out which game is on each channel, I have to stop at each channel, one at a time, rather than just being able to scroll through the guide. It’s painful and depressing.  Not to mention that I have to press every selection twice just to get it to “take.”

It has made an enjoyable day of watching football miserable, just like everything else with the downgrade.

New update is trash. Along with the issues you have stated our menus often glitch out and become unusable for a time. Extremely frustrating.

Agree with all these comments. The new guide is awful in every way. Why did they change??  Biggest problem to me is the font size. I can’t see the print even on a very big screen. Why cram so much on one screen??    Time to switch carriers.

What happened?  The view is horrible.  Can't read channels.  Overlay blocks watching on guide.  No more color coding on guide.  Page up page down disabled.  Screen overlay lasts too long.  Horrible font on guide.  On info just want basic name and channel not 50 things.  Then double tap used to give you more info.  Really.  Who was asked their opinion?  I see 74 pages of complaints.  I really just want to go back then go with a few changes one at a time, WITH VIEWER INPUT.

I’m so upset. I used to enjoy watching a show and browsing the guide. Now you can’t do both. I tried calling and chatting to see if i could go back to the old guide but I couldn’t reach a human. The font is also too small and the service is now slow. Hopefully if enough of us complain they’ll do something.

Horrible for many reasons. Please return to previous display as soon as possible

This UI is making me consider cutting the cord. This is not an upgrade, this is a downgrade. Paying the exorbitant amount I do and getting this in return is ridiculous.
Does Verizon even test with any customers this before they release it

does anyone at Verizon actually read this forum?  There are so many complaints and next to zero responses much less any resolution to the multitude of legitimate issues.  Maybe someone at Verizon could at least tell us what solutions theyre working on.
