Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

We have the same problems with this update as the OP. I hope that the developers bring back the ability to see the whole day’s programming for a single channel. That was a great feature for planning our viewing.

It took you years to put back the weather. Channel. How long before you fix this disaster?

Please just change this back to the original guide as soon as possible!

i literally just created an account just to be able to respond to how bad this is!

This new guide is completely unusable! The color coding is gone leaving just a mess of text you can not find anything! The remotes don’t even work properly there is such a lag in time between button pressing and any movement. There is so much that’s just so worse on here now I can’t even mention it all ! Why would this ever go out as an “upgrade” it looks as if everything was literally wiped out! Looks like just a prototype!

Please make it a priority to change this back ASAP....it’s seriously that bad to use!
and worse we are all at home looking forward to at least having a good working tv!

Please give us the option to go back to the old system. Like you did with the channel rail. There's a button where you can disable it. We need a button to disable this horrid channel guide system and go back to the old one which is 10 thousand percent better

Please give us the option to go back to the old channel guide system. Add an option in the settings so we can opt out of this horrible channel guide that does not respond to the remote. It is truly horrible. All we ask is for a choice. Thank you

This new update is so bad that my whole family is willing to drop Fios and just pay for streaming apps!

Why would you guys chAnge something that there is absolutely no problem with?!? The old guide was one of the best things about Fios,,, now when I tell people who have optimum that Fios is vastly superior, one of the reasons being the guide and how user friendly it is,,, now that point is moot bc you guys changed it for no good reason. Really bad decision. Whoever thought that this is an “upgrade” should seriously have their mind evaluated. Horrible horrible horrible!!!!!

I hope who decided to make these changes are fired! This is the dumbest thing Verizon has done.

This may well be the final reason to cut the cable.

After being on chat for two hours, Finally someone transferred me to an agent that acknowledged latest update issues. My main annoyance since update is that the SD Override no longer functions correctly.  Screen keeps stretching and closing all the time.  I think your agents need to be more informed and educated about potential update issues.

No changes to my Guide.  Awful and unreadable as usual.

This latest update seriously has me considering a switch to another provider; it’s that bad!

I work in software development and know you can’t please everyone, but the new guide is horrible and a step in the wrong direction.

Why did you take something which should be clean and simple to use and make it over-complex?

I can’t wait for you to roll this back or fix it with a whole new version!

2020 has been a terrible year for everybody in the US and Verizon has succeeded in making it worse. TWICE. First they change the “last channel” function to move at a glacial pace. And then they “update” the guide interface and strip it of all the advantages that the guide actually offers. It’s actually laughable that one of the biggest corporations in the country can charge the prices they do and get away with making their product worse.

Verizon, we plead with you, please go back to the old interface that no one had a problem with or seriously fix every update that 2020 has brought us. You have superior internet and cable, and that’s what we pay for. Please allow us to enjoy it.

How about a discounted rate on my bill since you guys bricked the DVR and the guide?

Does Comcast and FIOS have some type of working business arrangement?

My wife and I have constantly been complaining about these updates.   They are HORRIBLE.   In addition I can’t stand the big “30” on the screen every time I jump ahead 30 seconds.  This is a major problem for me.   I utilize the 30 second jump forward when watching the NFL and it’s perfect to jump between plays.   But now I have a big 30 in the screen.    Horrible horrible horrible.   I may switch and cancel altogether

The new guide is so awful that if they don't put it back the way it was VERY soon I will be cancelling my service.

This update is so bad I signed up for this forum solely to voice my opinion.

Not only is it incredibly ugly, it has completely messed up my service.

I have tried to put on a channel several times only for the channel to not be in service. This has made it so that several shows I DVR, when I go to watch them, I find out the show did not record and I get an error message.

If this isn't fixed soon, I will 100% be getting rid of Fios and switching to Hulu. The ugliness of the guide is 1 thing, but not getting the services I pay for is completely unacceptable.

On Monday I plan on calling and demanding some sort of financial compensation for the week I have not gotten what I pay for.

And again, if not fixed soon (soon being within the next week or 2) I will be canceling my Fios.

The new guide is horrible.  Having everything is one color is a loss of functionality, as is the loss of the show in the upper right hand corner of the screen.  The colors helped identify new shows as well as identify different types of shows.  How is having everything in monochrome an  improvement?

The most egregious problem with the new software are the problems it causes with the remote/cable box.  Changing the channel has become a frustrating experience.  I'll enter a three digit channel number and one or two numbers will appear.  I'll re-enter the number and again one or two number will appear.   If I go slower it will change the channel to the first digit.  Did we really need duplicate buttons to rewind or fast forward?  Forget about pausing.  I try to pause and it literally takes seconds to stop.  You took something that was working perfectly and broke it and try to sell it to us as an improvement?  Did you bother to have users do any actual testing with this garbage?  Were there any focus groups where the actual product was demonstrated and compared to what already existed?  This is the Windows Vista for a cable box.  You completely missed the mark with this update

Nilsa's post "Fios TV Interactive Media Guide (IMG) Welcome to your new viewing experience" is truly insulting. There is nothing to welcome. Now they're trying to make it sound like they have given us something great. Lame attempt at PR. It's like they're trying to sell hot wings in Hades. More proof we're just stuck with it. They're just going to try and convince us how great it is despite our HUNDREDS of complaints. Nilsa, Verizon has RUINED our viewing experience. I know you're just doing your job. But we have to use every tool in the toolbox to convince Verizon they have made a HUGE mistake. We demand action! Not a whitewash of our strong opposition to this AWFUL new guide. I was hoping for a post like "We heard you! We are taking actions to restore your viewing experience to what you enjoyed!" No such luck is guess.
