Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

The new FIOS interface is terrible.  The response to the remote input is sometimes not responsive or so slow it often causes me to tune to a channel I don’t want to view. The channel banner at the bottom of the page stays on the screen too long interfering with viewing.  The Guide is not pleasant to view with too many channels shown and small fonts on a black and white screen. Overall a terrible user experience. Is there a way to revert to the old interface?  I would gladly go back.

This new guide is absolutely horrific and I useable, and if they don’t fix it or return to previous guide, I’m bailing on Fios, paying the contract cancellation fees, and going to Comcast at both my primary and shore residences. Are you listening Verizon? And who at Verizon is getting fired for this abomination?

You are absolutely right. The new menu is awful for lots of reasons. They really made use of remote and finding information much more difficult and user unfriendly than ever before......Why, is an excellent question.

The new guide is horrible - who designed and tested this?   Cant read channel numbers unless I stand right in front of TV.  Cant easily distinguish the type of channel (movie, sports, etc.) because the channel background colors are gone.  You need to be a rocket scientist to figure out how to modify favorite channels.  When I fast forward a program, you display a useless banner on the bottom of the page for 9 seconds!  Page scroll on the channel guide doesn't work anymore.

Unless you solve these problems like restoring the old system that was much more user friendly, I'm cancelling my service when my contract is up for renewal.

There was no reason to make these changes and this is a typical example of allowing technicians to do things because they think they are neat!.

Made an account just for this ONE issue...

I will apadat to the changes , BUT I need to see what is on the channel I'm watching while I'm surfing the guide. The background transparency isn't enough, in fact it's worse.

I flip past dozens of channels in seconds, why do I need to see random album art/ screen caps for shows that i'm flipping past? Not to mention it takes up a decent part of the guide header.

Bring back Live TV viewing within the Guide

We hate the new update. When guide view set to 0 you don’t see any channels. The current and next shows is quite annoying! Not sure whose bright idea that was!!’ It’s bad!!!

also, the Chanel is so hard to see when you change channels that I have  press and hold channel button to run fast through the channels. Then you see a decent view/size channel.  Please provide a rollback to undo this horrible update!  Thanks

New Verizon guide software is awful. Give us back the old guide

So many problems with the new guide - I don’t even know where to start.  Did they do any testing with customers?  Why would they change it.  Just one more reason to switch.  Other options are cheaper anyway.

I agree the new guide sucks. It's slow and hard to read. The buttons on the remote don't do what they used to, such as the chapter next and back buttons do nothing now wheras they used to advance the guiede 90 minutes. moving 1/2 hour at a time is too many button pushes. I miss the color coding which made it easier to find things I want to watch. The fonts are too small and where you used to see who was in a program and something about it, now you have to push more buttons to find your information. You also can't adjust the amount of time things stay on the screen. I've worked in television for 44 years and this is the worst guide I've seen. Too busy, hard to read, and with less readly available information on screen with one push. The old guide gave us all of those features.

agree with most of the problems posted, including pressing channel numbers and constantly missing one, like hitting 586 and going to 56, also can no longer change channel then go back to the channel and scroll back to see what i missed.

Every day I find something even more frustrating. The newest is recording a series. With the old guide, when recording a series you used to have the option of "recording series with options" and you could set everything at one time. Now you only have the initial choice of "recording series."  You have to wait about 30 seconds for that process.  Then you have to select another button to select the recording options.  The new guide continues to be sluggish and slow.   Verizon, you have to change this.  The old guide was fantastic.  You removed all of the features that made that guide nearly perfect.  I have been resisting cutting the cord, but I truly think it's in my future now.

I have not found one thing I like or that is useful to me in the new interface. It is slower, clunkier, harder to read, less fun and less informative. Please give us an option to go to the previous version. The revised "last show" function and "closed caption" features are awful. Ugh!

Ridiculous! Absurd! HATE IT!!!  Did Verizon actually pay and listen to some genius or geniuses to absolutely totally ruin watching my DVR. My "Viewer's Experience" is downright horrible. When FF or rewinding do we really need a big banner block what we're watching to inform us what we're watching (duh!) for 6 seconds. If I somehow don't know what I'm watching there is an info key I can press!  FF thru any sporting event and not being able to see the next play because of this 6 second banner defeats the purpose. Every update change is senseless. On the phone for 45 minutes with a tech trying to reset banners and whatever else the tech could think of to no avail. Let's hope Verizon can fix what they broke as fast as they broke it. It's been a month.

Wakeup. If not, I'm going to streaming and paying $200 less per month than I am now. $2400 a year less for internet only.

77 pages and counting and not 1 person has a positive thing to say so I'll start.

I'm POSITIVE that this upgrade is horrible and we need the old guide back.  Last night trying to watch TV was painful and tiring.  The lag, the guide, the junk all over the screen just makes for a terrible experience.

I also made an account for the sole purpose of complaining about this update. It's terrible. It took technology back 10 years.  Who decided this new guide was a good idea? I agree with all of the posts.
My specific irritation is the Back function on the guide is gone. When I am scrolling thru the guide and hit Info on a program, how do I return back to the guide to continue scrolling where I left off? You can't! You need to start scrolling back at the channel you are on. What a waste of time. It's 200 channels ago.  It used to be the Left Arrow button would take me from Info back to the guide so I could continue scrolling from where I left off, but that doesn't seem to work anymore. This is enough to get me to switch from Verizon. It's that bad. The color coding and sluggish system were bad enough, but this feature missing is unforgivable.

Too bad. They had good internet.

The new Guide released late September/early October is extremely slow. There is a delay anywhere from a couple seconds to over 30 seconds after I press the guide button, and also slow when paging through the guide results. Are there any options to correct this?

"IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DONT FIX IT" is a motto I grew up with.  Guess the geniuses at Fios development didn't.  Your new guide is a piece of trash that looks like something from my old Atari.  Please read the 100's of pages of revolting comments about your horrible guide AND GET BACK TO US WITH SOME IDEAS of what we can expect that you REALLY will be doing about this!  YOU OWE US THAT MUCH.

You are not the only game in town.  Someone get me a scissors to cut this cord!

New guide is horrible. I can’t read it. The former one was the best. I hate the new one

If the intent was to take away features that users were comfortable with and had become accustomed to, to clutter the screen with unwanted promos and ads, and to make the interface so unresponsive that it is next to un-useable then you have succeeded.   If that was not the intent then your Product Team, Technical Advisors, and Management who approved this disaster should be fired.

No doubt that you have helped accelerate Cord Cutting with this release.
