Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

It is just stupid to ‘update’ by deleting features - and hubris not to check w users first. Guess I’ll call Comcast tomorrow

Just checked the "guide" to see if anyone at Verizon came to their senses yet...nope still horrible.

Oh my gosh, YES. The new guide is so bad I don’t want to even watch FIOS and just go to a streaming service. Plus, the DVR functions, previous channel functions and number of other actions are all less responsive and slower. If Verizon doesn’t correct these matters soon, I’m just going to cut the board completely.

YES! Can we please see what we are watching in the upper left hand corner. That's all I want, I'll deal with the rest.

I agree with the other posts about the new guide issues.  I am so disappointed in the new changes and would like them to change it back to how it used to be.  It's hard to read and the black and white color scheme isn't very clear on a 41" TV screen.  Our remotes are difficult to use now, the buttons have to be pressed very slowly and oftentimes the wrong numbers appear and we have to re-enter them.  Very frustrating. For the money we spend on our Verizon monthly service, I really feel as though they should try to fix the problems.

Agreed.  The new guide is total junk.  The picture behind the guide is barely visible.  The channel icons are no longer there except for the "TV" box on every channel.  The font is way too small.  When you press for more info, there is no using the back button to get back to the guide.  You end up having to exit the guide completely and start over.  With the old guide you could "back arrow" back to where you were in the guide.  Also, if you want to access the "upcoming shows" function to set the DVR none of the selections indicate which channel they're on without having to open each one.  And not having the current show playing in the top left corner is a giant step backwards.  Go back to the previous design!!

Made an account for the sole purpose of complaining about this update - it's that bad.

Totally agree with everything that's been mentioned so far in this thread.

It's so much more difficult to quickly scan and find something to watch.

I'd like to add:

Bring back the option to disable the info bar/position banner when using DVR controls. I don't need or want to view the info bar when I'm skipping back and forth. Every time I skip ahead or back, it stays on screen for 8 seconds.

And remove the control function from showing on screen too. I'm trying to watch a TV show, not "info bar & +30 sec".

I don't remember if was an option in the settings to disable it or it was just like that, but the old method was much better. Just skip ahead, no need to show anything on screen. I know what I'm watching and what button I just pressed.

Absolutely! This was a awful change!

Same!  Created account just to make sure we have enough support here.

"I don't need or want to view the info bar when I'm skipping back and forth. Every time I skip ahead or back, it stays on screen for 8 seconds."

It's awful. If watching the news and trying to read the scroll at the bottom, you have to go back 30 seconds because otherwise that idiotic info bar blocks the bottom of the screen.

What overpaid fools on a committee decided these 'upgrades' were a great idea? There is not on change that does not make the consumer experience worse, not one!

Same! I created an account just to complain about the new guide. It’s that bad! The font is so tiny I can’t read the channel numbers unless I get up close. So frustrating!

Verizon has really ruined their TV service with this upgrade.  The guide is unusable.  Verizon executives should revert the guide back to previous configuration and fire all involved in this debacle.

Ha. I did too. New guide is atrocious

CorrFam1

I did the same, created an account to let Verizon know what a mistake it was to change the Guide.  Much worse now, we hate it.

Completely agree with this thread.  Fix this!

Couldn't agree more. I know what show I'm watching if I'm hitting skip or replay. I don't need to be told how long I just skipped. If you use those features to watch games, the on-screen graphics are a big hassle.

Also, the mini guide you get by pressing the down button had most of it's functionality taken away. You can't skip ahead days in that guide or type in a channel number to see the mini guide for that channel.

Also, in the regular guide, the channels are no longer named. It just says "TV" on the left where the channel name used to be.

I don't understand what they were trying to accomplish with this update. And I am usually very patient with updates like this.

You used to be able to disable or decrease the time the banner showed after hitting skip. As many people have said this was a great feature. If you are watching baseball or football, you can skip in between pitches or downs. The new way is annoying. Last time Verizon upgraded they also eliminated the option to skip with out seeing the banner and people complained then.

please fix again.
