Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

I miss that feature the most!! Why why ? Why change things for the worst ? I asked and we can’t get that feature back . Im

seriously considering changing to another provider .

I have the same question! In the "menu", I found something that said that we could stay with the new not-so-transparent guide with the show playing behind it or we could choose to go back to the show playing in the upper left corner. But I have been all though everything and I can not find a way to make a choice. Plus, everything is soooo slooow. I hate the whole thing.

As if things weren't difficult enough this year, they go and remove the color-coding. My brain hurts trying to find something to watch. I might just curl up and die now

This is the worst guide ever. You can’t view the channel playing while searching other stations. You can’t see the channel number on the line when searching the guide. When changing channels there is a lag time.
please take a look and try to fix this.
when are you going to fix starttv. Periodically it freezes up. This has been going on at least a month.

I cannot put into words how bad this update is!  Surfing channels is a struggle.  The “ last “ channel button works less than 50% of time

can’t keep watching channel and scroll other ones by using numbers.

DVR often has a 10-20 second delay when selecting.

when first turned on its like an old car,  laggy at first and eventually warms up.

I wonder if Verizon has received more than 1020 messages  about any other topic?  Still no acceptable resolution.  That should tell you all you need to know about the company, customer service and what Verizon thinks of us.

This update is horrible!  It was unnecessary.  The guide was fine prior to this update.  The lag time with doing anything (calling up the guide, switching back to last channel, calling up DVR, etc) is so frustrating....makes me want to throw the remote.  Honestly, if Xfinity were an option for us where we live, we’d switch now just because of this stupid update!!!!

Absolutely horrible!!!!

when Skipping ahead and backwards, The overlay shows that you skipped.  I KNOW I DID, I PRESSED THE BUTTON!  This ruins DVRing sports especially.  In addition to that avorrlay, it overlays the show info.  IThat ruins DVRing sports too.

Now pressing up o my shows info for the show I’m watching.  That’s what the info button is for.   I want to scroll through the guide while watching like before.

the main guide no longer give the small picture of current program.  Instead, it plays behind the guide. Which has no use.

Very much dislike:

1. No chaptering!  This makes watching a DVR'd show ridiculous at times.  When trying to  pick up in the middle of a show, it takes twice as long to find the spot you left off later in the program since you either need to FF and watch it to see where to stop, or set your skip to 5 minutes, and then using the skip to skip commercials becomes unusable.

2.  Color coding needs to return, especially since you have crammed so much into the guide it is impossible to quickly scan anymore.

3.  The bottom frame is too large.

4.  Where is the current show frame when viewing the guide?  Really would like that back.

5.  Remote responsiveness is ridiculous.  We have replaced all of the batteries in all of our remotes and it did nothing.  Constantly getting a channel we don't want because some of the numbers we have pressed do not register.  And, it takes twice as long to change the channel.

I agree with your comments, especially item 5. When I first turn on the TV it takes several imputs from the remote to finally reach the desired channel. This is just another corporate "fixing what is not broken". Really **bleep** me off.

I had to go to work so there maybe more going on in this fix than I reported but the DVR chapter fix, the PiP, and the channel program info are the ones I noticed at O dark forty.

Finally someone mentions the "chaptering" in #1 of your post. I don't know why others are not bothered by this. It's driving me nuts for the exact reasons you described. FiOS -- Fix This!

Yeah, changing channels (the most fundamental of all television features!) has become incredibly slow.  Even after tweaking all the options to shut off Now and Next, etc., there is a ridiculous delay.

I don't understand why it is so hard for Verizon to prioritize this; in the "olden days" it was never an issue to change channels quickly with the arrows, having nothing but a simple channel display in the corner.  If more information was needed, one could always push the info button!

The changes to the guide also slow everything down and provide nothing useful in return.  It has only become harder to read.  May I propose adding a "simple and fast" option in the future to prioritize speed and readability over everything else, since apparently all these fancy features come with huge latency as an overhead?

It's a bit melodramatic, but I'm probably going to cancel my television service over this if nothing changes.  Like most people, I was on the fence anyway.

Speed, Readability, and actually being able to see the show you are watching are the key.

I agree, thats why the info button is there so I can see more info when I need it (like 5% of the time) rather than having info display that you can’t read.
Would be nice of they surveyed users before making changes people dont want.

Give me back the old guide.  I haven't read all the dislikes but I didn't see one that bothers me very much..... not identifying the networks.  Who wants to see the word TV on every line.  What a waste of valuable screen space.  I can't always remember what network has what channel number, not to mention that they move around occasionally.  My eyes often select by Network icon and call letters.  In addition I strongly dislike what most others have already mentioned....  live tv in corner, color coded programs, font too small.  Please, please, please give us back our old guide.
