Sept 2020 Fios DVR and Guide Update

This week Fios pushed out interface updates for their TV services. After nearly 3 hours in chats, I was finally told that there is no way to roll back updates once loaded and they base new update options based on posts in the forum. Below are my complaints that they will only fix with enough support on here, if you have the same issues, please mark the post.

1. They removed the chapter function for recorded programs on the dvr (the up arrow that would allow you to move to any 10 min marker in a program).

2. The new Now and Next function causes latency when switching channels. Even after setting it to 0 seconds.

3. They removed the ability to view a single channel lineup in the tv guide. In the past I would just hit guide a second time to see the next 5-10 shows on a single channel.

4. Finally, I just find the prettier guide view harder to actually read and process. Not sure if it is the number of channels,  dark screen, or just that it is too busy.  Turning off the background video helped a little, but not much.

Dear Verizon Customers,

Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention. We are listening to you and based on your feedback, we have made SOME additional changes to the new Fios TV Interface with the APR 7.8 update. Here are the interface updates:

    • Guide legibility improvements

You will see the above mentioned Fios TV interface changes roll out from 12/09 through 1/13.

Additional responses:

Coloring: Here is another way to navigate to channel groups that used to be colored:

The channel neighborhoods are still organized by the genres you're familiar with.  While in the main Guide, press the Guide button again to apply your filters and move over to the Jump To function.  Now you can jump your guide to specific channel neighborhoods.  If you have Fios TV One with a Voice Remote, while in the guide you can also say “Jump to <channel neighborhood>”.

Last Button: The button labeled "Last" on our remotes for 1100 and 4100's can be configured to operate in one of 2 ways. You can either jump back and forth between your last 2 watched programs, or you can have it bring up the "Last Watched Rail" which contains more of your most recently watched content, including VOD and DVR shows.

Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

If the "Last Watch Rail" disappears, please use this workaround: Reboot the box or boxes on which the issue is seen to check if that fixes the problem. If it still appears bothersome or comes back, please disable the last watched rail.  Access Menu>Settings>System>Television>Last Watched Rail to enable and disable the Last Watched Rail.

We are aware of the Last Watched Rail issue reported in this Community and we will have a fix in place with the next release.

Guide Banner: You can disable the Guide Ad banner setting via the following:

Main Menu>>settings>>Notification>Guide Banners->Disable

Lagging / Slowness / Sluggishness:

If you are still experiencing lagging, slowness or sluggishness when interacting with the set top box after the latest update (APR 7.8), please elaborate on which specific functionality is exhibiting this behavior (ex. Navigating Menu/Guide/On Demand, channel surfing, DVR etc.)?

Please feel free to provide any additional details which will be useful and assist the development team as they further investigate.

As always, we greatly appreciate and value your feedback.

Thank you.

This atrocity just invaded our TV, and I'm totally beside myself. Okay, everyone in my house is healthy, the dog hasn't run away in a few weeks, and my belly is full, but this awful "upgrade" makes me forget all that. Like everyone else I miss the color coding on the guide, the channel names and numbers are too small for my old eyes to read, and the whole thing is plain ugly. Adding insult to injury, I switched to my DVR to see what horrors awaited me with that interface and I can STILL watch the program that's currently on while browsing there. Why, why, WHY did you take that feature away in the guide?

I was willing to chalk up the snafu with the Last button to a one-time mistake but bad design is becoming a trend at Verizon. If this isn't fixed soon I guess I'll have to start paying attention to those endless Spectrum mailings I get.

I absolutely hate the new black and white guide. There service I horrible. Haven't have a good picture and fios sound worst ever. The new update the last straw for me. Cancelling my service first thing in morning

Same complaint as many people, the new guide is horrible.  Verizon should adopt a new motto "don't fix what's not broken."  Okay, nice idea to be able to see more channels at once when opening the guide, BUT... now it's so small can't read it, only get a few letters of each show (especially the half hours shows), so you have to take even more time to hit each individual channel to see what's actually playing.  Do you people even try this stuff out before deploying it?

Horrible! When channel surfing now I see future programs as well as the current one. If I wanted to see future programs on channel I'd go to the full guide. Now, if I change channels I get a sliver of info on what's currently playing! Get rid of this now before I cancel entirely.

Very, very delayed response to channel changes -- this is horrible.

This was just pushed to us today as well. It is awful.

Is FIOS trying to drive customers away? During a time when people are moving off of cable, to use other platforms, Verizon is encouraging people to leave them with bad executive decision making. There was nothing wrong with the Guide.

This so-called upgrade was only done by someone trying to justify their salary. If FIOS doesn't change things back to normal, I'll look into dumping their $2xx monthly payment.

Who thought, hey lets ruin and stress out our customers with our new guide. You have taken away the enjoyment of watching tv.  Whats on...... I cant see.  and all the other reasons yr customers have brought up, i agree. I never thought i would leave verizon and so when Optimum would knock on my door, i would say im not interested. You know what? I kept his card this time. Dont have to suggest a mass exodus as you will have done it to yourselves.

Good luck youll need it

Still watching this thread for a solution I fear is not coming.  TV has grown ever more painful to watch with the lag of the guide and the terrible interface.

I see the complaints have slowed down so I'm thinking Verizon is outlasting the complaints.

You are most likely correct.

I also used to be able to click "up arrow" on the remote and get a small guide to the right so i could still watch a show, but surf to a new channel. Great for finding something new to watch while the current show is still on.

Can't do that any more. There is no function. Up Arrow brings up a horrible looking guide for the current channel and if I enter another channel, it now changes (slowly). I don't want to change the channel yet. The right arrow function of selecting categories of channel is also gone. Useful when i want to select from sports channels or movie channels, etc.

This is a TERRIBLE UPDATE.

i've already had to disable the "last channel new feature", though nice to see the last 5 channels, because it was incredibly SLOW.

i also hate watching any "on demand" shows using FiOS. the controls are very slow. Hit pause and 5-10 seconds later it will react. Horrible if I have a phone right or have a fast interruption and need it to top.

this is getting to be enough to get rid of FiOS and cut the cord.

Hit the nail on the head.  Channel surfing now super painful.  Barely used the guide before.  Will keep the internet but thinking of ditching the Fios TV.  I’d rather go back to Cablevision, they **bleep** too but at least the surfing is user friendly and no delay.  Plus, last channel button is instant and just what it should be, the LAST channel...  These are not tech companies they are old stagnant utilities.

No 'chaptering' now???!! So I'm supposed to fast forward through half a movie I partially watched and recorded? This is about 15 years out of date now. Might well be time to cut the cord and go apps only.

THIS IS JUST ONE REASON WE HATE VERIZON! You couldn’t provide a menu option or setting to let your subscribers choose between “this new really crappy guide” and “the previous guide”???  Really? Did you even consider employing a survey to let users provide feedback on your crap UI? NEWSFLASH:  YOU MADE IT WORSE! It’s harder to read than it was before. Pictures next to each of the channels? Are you kidding me?  I am RAGING RIGHT NOW. I turn the TV on to relax after a long stressful day and now you have induced stress. Nobody in the household likes the guide.

Verizon, you suck.  Roll it back already. And get rid of the 8-year old that came up with this design. Unbelievable.

New guide is absolutely a mistake!!! I agree with above in that it wasn't broken, why change it?  The new format is much harder to read and find what you want as it is all one color now.  Before it was nice and easy to see movies (in red), sports (in green) and other shows (blue).  Now I cant tell where I am at in the channels as the channel logos are too small to see.  Bring back the colors and make logos bigger.

Can't see the guide, the letters are small and the screen is too busy.  Loved the fact that I could page down quickly and now that is gone.  Everything I liked is gone. I dread using the guide now to find something to watch.

At my son's house I saw his Comcast guide and it was beautiful.  If the problems with this new guide aren't fixed, I'll probably go back to comcast.

The New guide went backwards ten or more years! Channel numbers and print are too small. I miss the colors for genre. Please go back to the easy to use format! This new one is terrible.

Verizon --- are you reading these comments? I don't see any replies, feedback, comments from anyone at all. With this kind of avalanche of negative feedback one might think you'd at least offer up some sort of reply. Or, lacking that, admit you've jumped the shark here and fall back to what these thousands of customers actually found useful.

Here’s an interesting metric:  how many of us created a log-in so we could tell Verizon how bad their guide is?  Flipping through the pages of comments, it’s obvious that quite a few of us did.

Thank you Verizon for an epic fail!  The new TV guide is horrible!  It’s extremely difficult to see the channel number on the left side, color coding has been removed which indicated movie channels or sports and the font size is considerably smaller.  Please bring back the old guide!

The Verizon FIOS guide was updated tonight - it is absolutely horrible. First 5 minutes with the guide:

  • The font is difficult to read
  • Channel numbers are tiny
  • Cannot watch tv while looking at the guide - no picture in picture like the old guide
  • Some of the fonts are so small they can't be read
  • The icons for the channels are very difficult to read
  • It is slow to respond
  • The free to me option is kind of insulting considering the monthly cost
  • You cannot exit the guide without selecting a channel, which causes a delay

I'm afraid of what else I'm going to find. I'm not happy and I am seriously thinking about dumping verizon Fios.
