TCM (Turner Class Movies) in HD (High Definition)

It's been over two years since I signed up for FIOS's Ultimate package. I have noticed new channels since as Aspire, Revolt, Logo UP, Pivot (soon to be deleted) etc have received both the SD & HD feeds. TCM is still not broadcast in High Definition whereas similar channels such as AMC are! When will Verizon add TCM to the HD lineup? There are more 16:9 movies shown on TCM and I as well as other movie buff subcribers  have to settle for the small screen. In addition, why are the majority of the shopping channels broadcast in HD? (Talk about a waste of bandwidth). Why  wasn't the HD feed added to El Rey Network where the majority of the shows are broadcast in 16:9? Just wondering what is the hold up?

I initially wrote that I had been told that TCM was not available because it was no longer part of my package and that I needed to upgrade at a cost of almost $50 more. I refused to pay that much more and it appeared that I was going to cancel my Verizon service and seek other options. I called back in the evening and was told that it was not available due to an outage problem and that a ticket had been created and it would be up by 10:15 last night. That never happened.

Finally today I got a wonderful person to look into this problem through the chat online and they thoroughly looked into the issue and finally explained to me that the HD transformation was in process and it would not go into effect until September 15 on the new channel 730. She also helped me with my current plan and helped me upgrade and revise it at very little extra cost. Kudos and thanks to Verizon employee Scarlet. She went above and beyond with outstanding customer service!

I use FIOS for internet, and am very happy with the quality and reliability of the service.  I am currently using Optimum for cable TV and have been strongly considering switching to FIOS for TV.  But in checking out the available channels I find much to my surprise and disbelief that FIOS does not currently offer TCM in HD.  This is a deal breaker for me!  TCM is offered in HD on Optimum, and as it is the channel most often watched in our home, I cannot consider switching until FIOS offers it also!

It's frustrating to still not have TCM in HD on Verizon. Watch TCM streaming service is in HD and is available to Verizon subscribers who have TCM included in their package. It has both an east coast and west coast feed as well as some, but not all movies on demand. Biggest drawback is you can't DVR the movies on Watch TCM. Its available on Fire TV and ROKU. I have given up on Verizon ever adding the HD feed of TCM. If you call them they will be very sympathetic and tell you they will pass your request along but nothing changes and I have told them so . Not sure why TCM has been singled out when every other movie channal is available in HD but that is the situation.

So now that Verizon had added TCM in HD it is NOW NOT part of my plan and has been removed. When I called earlier I was told I needed to upgrade which would cost me about $60 more a month! Way to go Verizon!

I will be cancelling my cable with Verizon.

I’m with DIRECTV. I’ve put up with satellite cloud problems for years waiting for FiOS to pick up TCM in HIGH DEF. Until they do, I won’t change TV service! Get with it, Verizon, pay for the TCM /HD license, and pay attention to your customers or keep losing business. You could have had me subscribe to FiOS TV for the past three years already.  Greed has consequences $$$  😞

Please add TCM HD. Fios is too expensive to not have this.

I know this topic has been discussed before, but I feel like it needs to be brought up again and again until Fios finally does something about it.. Why is there still no TCM in HD? Maybe you think SD is good enough because the majority of the movies are in black and white. But it’s not good enough! More and more classics are being remastered in HD and we  want to get to see those movies in the proper format... also, The SD channels do not fit the new TV screens properly and if we had access to TCM HD, it would remedy that... I doubt anything will be done, considering that people have been asking gor this for years, but I truly hope it does before I cancel my service...

Yeah...this was the biggest reason I went to Hulu.

It is now October of 2021 and Verizon still has not addressed this issue, nor have they even acknowledged our complaints. Everywhere I have traveled, so far, have  TCM in HD. There is absolutely no acceptable reason why TCM cannot be shown in HD. We watch TCM movies on a larger TV screen these days, but they are displayed in a very small "box" format, of sorts. At least let us know WHY you cannot provide us the same service that so many others have.

It's infuriating for sure with the monthly bills we pay. If you don't care about recording stuff on TCM, you might try my solution which is to watch the movies on the TCM app through Apple TV (I assume Roku, etc will work as well) You can watch live in HD, and of course "most" of the movies are made available on the app for a limited time after the original run date (usually a minimum of a week, some longer). I can't stand viewing it in SD so this has worked well for me.

I agree! Turner Classic Movies also shows wonderful documentaries that have been produced in recent years and obviously look much better shown in HD.

I have FIOS for phone and Internet but keep Spectrum for Cable TV because it shows TCM in HD. I'm sure Verizon has cost me money by keeping me from triple-play pricing deals and that is infuriating. But TCM means so much to me that I'm willing to pay the extra $$.

I've read complaints about this going back years and have yet to see a response from Verizon. The company just doesn't care about its customers.

I agree. There’s no good reason not to have TCM in HD

I recently switched from Comcast Cable to Fios Cable TV.  I'm generally happy with my cable line up, except for one rather glaring exception and omission.  Why, for God's sakes, is Turner Classic Movies offered ONLY in standard definition?  All of the other major cable carriers across America offer TCM in both standard and High Definition.  Comcast Cable has offered TCM in High Definition for many years, as has Time Warner Cable.  I've been told that the reason for this omission is that TCM shows a great many black and white movies.  This argument simply doesn't hold water, as TCM often broadcasts such high profile color motion pictures as "Lawrence of Arabia," "Ben Hur," "My Fair Lady," and "West Side Story."  These movies truly suffer and lose their power when shown by Fios in mere standard definition.  Even black and white films, however, are vastly improved when broadcast in High Definition.  Fios offers The Western Channel in both standard and High Definition, and a great many of their films are in black and white.  Fios is doing their loyal viewers a disservice by not offering TCM in High Definition.  I'm basically satisfied with my decision to leave Comcast Cable and go to Fios ... but I would be a good deal happier with my decision, and remain with Fios, if the powers that be in Programming give us what we want ... a truly satisfying movie watching experience by offering Turner Classic Movies in High Definition as all of the other competing, major cable services across the country have already done.

There is a difference between HD and aspect ratio.  Yes, films before 1952 were shot in the 4:3 aspect ratio.  These were films, not videos.  When broadcast in HD, much more detail is visible.  Wide-screen films (16:9) aspect ration films are shrunk to fit in standard def (SD) and look terrible.  I don't know the exact percentage but I'd say about half of TCM's films are wide-screen (and the period from 1952 to present represents more than half of the movie industry's life span to date).

AMC is not a direct competitor to TCM.  They started out like TCM, actually before TCM but Ted Turner got the rights to the MGM and Warner Brothers catalogs and put AMC at a big disadvantage.  AMC got greedy and started showing commercials in the films.  They also had excellent hosts providing informed commentary (such as Bob Dorian) but cut them out, too.

It's strange that Verizon provides SD and HD for some strange channels - including shopping channels or preaching channels - but not TCM.  But I wouldn't be surprised if the real reason has to do with money and Verizon is not willing to be upfront about that.

It’s ridiculous Fios doesn’t have TCM in hd. All tv providers carry it HD. If you have Apple TV or amazon FireStick u can get the WatchTCM app and stream it in HD. They allow u to stream live TCM broadcast as well as huge selection of on demand

I have been waiting over 3 years for TCM in high definition. As a film fan, I am shocked that TCM-HD hasn't been added to the high definition lineup. Why can't this channel be added?
