TV One set top box issue. No signal to TV...

Good Morning Verizon community.  I had made the jump from the legacy set top box equipment which worked fine but was large to the smaller more discrete TV One box.

Setup was a breeze.  The UI was much quick which was a big plus on day 1 and the remotes a very nice compared to previous remote model.  Then day 2 comes, turn on the tv and set it to the Verizon box HMDI input and its a black screen.

I figure the box is asleep so I input buttons on the remote to "wake it up".  Nothing.  Black screen.  The Box has a white light which I believe indicates it is powered on and working.  Any press of the remote shows input recieved as the white light registers the remotes input.  The remote will turn the TV on and off so it is not a remote issue.

I then powered off the box, unplugged and plugged back in.  The TV One box did its start up and initialization setup it did the previous day when I first set it up, thankfully this is quicker than previous box.  After initialization, the box finds live TV and we can watch tv channels again.

Day 3, roles around, turn on the tv and find the same issue.  TV One box is not showing signal.  The screen is black.  The ONLY method I have to make this box send signal to the television is by hard restarting it and going through initialization start up and setup every day.  This is beyond unacceptable since I had to pay the $50 hardware update fee...

My goal on the forum today is to hope someone has found a solution for this situation?

My equipment:  Samsung 65MU8000 tv,  TV One Set Top Box (bigger one).

Note that every other devices ive plugged in via HDMI to this tv has worked without issue.  In fact I have a soundbar system with an HMDI passthrough that has a Nintendo switch connected and that pops up automatically whenever I turn the switch on without problems.  This seems entirely related to the Set Top Box.

There is a setting I believe in the Fios Voice remote section to control external devices. Try disabling that.

Did this resolve your issue?

I often have the same "black (blank) screen" issue. Instead of having to always physically reset the STB, I found an easier solution: I watch a specific video (on YouTube) for a few seconds which magically makes the black-screen problem disappear and I can return to normal viewing. It usually happens once or twice a day but fortunately I have a relatively easy, quick fix for this extremely weird, annoying problem. Hopefully Verizon will someday resolve this issue.

Were you able to resolve this? I have the exact same issue with a Vizio TV. If so, how did you resolve? I literally have tried everything I think.

Same issue.

It's not a lack of video. The STB is sending a black picture. Sound is OK.

The only solution is to;

1. Reboot by holding down the top button.

2. Unplug the power from the STB and reconnect.

3. Unplug the HDMI connector from the back of the STB, reconnect.

I've replaced the scrawny supplied HDMI cable with a Monster HDMI cable. No change.

Tested all HDMI ports on the TV. All inputs do the same thing.

I'll try one more box. Last chance Verizon.

THIS IS MY SECOND STB. First STB did the same thing.

What resolution is the Fios box set to? If it's 4Kk, the TV needs to be set to enhanced color on the Fios input. Try setting the Fios box to 1080i and see if you get a picture.

Thanks for response. The STB was set to 2160. Changed to 1080p. I'll check the settings on the TV's HDMI ports. Post results tomorrow AM.

Thanks again.

You might need to set the Fios box to 1080i, not 1080P. Some TVs don't like 1080P.

Update:

Yesterday changed to 1080p. Turned off STB/TV for a few hours. Energized and a normal picture was displayed. Thought that you were on the something.

Shutdown for the night. Awoke next morning, grabbed some coffee, energized both devices.....blank screen. Just audio. Unplugged/plugged HDMI cable. Picture returned.

I'll try 1080i next. But I have a 4K TV (TCL 65") It accepts Apple TV HDR/Dolby 4K all day...Why should downgrade my view resolution to resolve an apparent problem with the STB.

I do greatly appreciate the assistance.

Check the input menu on the TV for an enhanced color or HDR setting or 4K setting for the input you are using for the Fios box. Also make sure all the cables are High-Speed certified.

The 1080i test was successful. But that was only one night. I'll leave it and test for a few days.

I replaced the spaghetti thin HDMI cable supplied from Verizon with a Monster HDMI cable. It's the same cable I use for the Apple TV to TV connection.

Question:

How could it be a cable issue if I can switch from 1080i to display 2160p?

The problem with poor HDMI cable is usually low bandwidth. To pass 2160 HDR the cable needs to have an 18Gps bandwidth. You might be able to get away with a lower bandwidth cable for very short distances, but if the program material gets complex, the data rate goes up and you have issues.

For three straight mornings, had no issues at 1080i. This morning and a blank screen. Unplugged/plugged HDMI cable and picture returned. A cable issue? High speed not a requirement then.

Switched to 2160 to watch Netflix via Verizon. Nothing but snow. Had to force a reboot.

After that I was able to watch 2160 programming. Why would it be a cable issue when it works then sometimes not?

It's a 6ft HDMI cable. Same as used for my Apple TV connection. No issues with that configuration.

The intermittent issue could be a cable issue.  Bad connector, bandwidth issues, interference issues. The ones Verizon gives you are for 1080 at best. Also is the input the fios box going to on your TV setup for auto resolution, 4K or 1080i? Is it also set to enhanced or deep color? Do you see the Screen saver on the fios box? Worst case is you may have a bad Fios box if nothing else helps.

Interesting you mention interference. STB sits on my PS4 which I leave in rest mode when not in use. I'll try a complete shutdown of the PS4.

You're right, the VZ supplied HDMI cable is a **bleep**.

I've gone through my TV settings. I see nothing referring to enhanced or deep color or anything close.

I see a screen saver when I get a picture...

I'm relenting, just ordered a new HDMI cable;

Thoughts?

I'll receive the cable tomorrow. I'll let you how it works. Greatly appreciate your assistance. I've enjoyed our conversations.

That cable is the absolute best you could get for your system. It meets all the requirements for 4K HDR and ARC. If you still have problems, you can count out the cable. Interesting thought on having the Fios box on top of the PS4. A lot of electrical stuff going on in there and I'm sure very little shielding. What make and model TV are you using? i might be able to look it up and make some suggestions.

Installed new cable last night. Purposely set FiOS resolution to 2160. Not sure if this mattered, but on my TV I can chose what I want displayed upon turning the TV on. It was set to Live TV (OTH) because of the blank screen issue. Changed it to display FiOS. Shutdown for the night.

This morning everything worked as supposed to.  Too early to say if it's fixed but off to a good start.

Worked the first morning. Hasn't worked since. Only option left is to replace the box. But has recordings we want. Guess we'll live with it for now.

Thanks for your help.

Are you going straight from the Fios box to the TV? Have you tried another HDMI input on the TV for the Fios box? Do you always see the screensaver when you turn off the Fios box?

Yes going straight to TV. Yes tried different TV inputs. I've never seen the screen saver.

I have the remote programmed to turn off TV and STB simultaneously. I'll try manual mode next time. Does the STB actually turn off? or just goes to standby/screen saver?

BTW. Got a picture this morning @2160.
