VMS4100 overheating ?

I know I probably need to call Verizon Support, but in the short term, any help? The STB (VMS4100) starts revving like it's overheating or running the motor/fan at a high speed for some reason. This happens about every 3 to 4 days, and lasts until we unplug it, which silences it for a few more days. It's really noisy, but more of a concern is if it is a fire danger. The box is probably 6 years old and is the only STB that we have. Thanks for any advice.

Well, new box on the way, but boy did that take a lot of work. PM with Verizon Support here on the forum didn't get answered. Technical support phone robot failed and stopped responding to my answers. Chat was my next attempt and it took chats with 2 different people, but they were able to resolve my issue since the box is at risk of overheating. Thanks everyone for your input, it made me realize it was important to get the STB replaced.

If you feel the box when this happens is it hot to the touch or just warm? If it is hot, get a replacement immediately, do not wait. If it is only warm it could be a bad bearing in the fan, or one of the components overheating. Also make sure it has space around it to cool. Either way, sounds like its time to get a new box.

The STB will be warm to the touch under normal conditions. I am unaware of any fans inside the VMS.
A hard drive with bad bearings would make a noise.
Either way, as Clem said, reach out to Verizon Repair for a replacement. 🙂
