is there any way to extend a program while it is recording, such as a sports program.  i know that when i had comcast, i could do that while the program is recording, but I can't figure out how to do it with fios, if it is even possible.

any help would be great.

Unfortunately it is not possible.  The only way is to either record the show following or set up a manual recording for the length of time you want to extend.  Certainly a feature I wish they would add.

There's a setting to say how much longer you wish to record after the show is over (on the schedule).   So you could set that up ahead of time.  I do that for Baseball usually.  I think it goes pretty far.  I've used 1/2 hour over and it may even go to an hour or further (I'm at work & can't double check).

If you're watching the game when the recording ends, you can just hit the record button & it will start right there.  It will create another recording and probably name it as per the schedule (ie not the game).  A little disjunct, but it works.

When you set up the DVR to record a series, as opposed to a single showing of a program, you are given the option to extent the recording for some additional amount of time (don't remember the maximum and I am not at home to check). With that in mind, and with the reservation that I have not personally done this but have been told it will work: While the DVR is recording the program you want to extend, hit the Record button again. This should cause the DVR to go into the Series scheduling mode, where you can specify additional recording time.

Again, this is not from personal experience, but it supposedly does allow you to extent the current recording. If it does, later you would probably want to go in and remove the series from the schedule.

If anybody tries this, be sure to report back whether it works or not.

Guys, if you re-read the original post  the question is regarding what you can do ONCE A RECORDING HAS STARTED.  Yes there are options to extend before (for both series and one time recordings that work well) but as I stated none for once the program has started, hence the suggestions of recording the show after or setting up a manual recording from the program's scheduled end for however long one wants (upto 6 hours - limitation on manual recording duration).

To give some quick steps to recording the next slot easily.

If you are watching the show/event while it's recording:

Press Down to get the small guide.

Press Right until you see the info for the show following what you are recording

Press RECORD button.

This will create a seperate recording but it can often be done with only 3 key presses.
