Pretty much only locals. Might get the odd weather channel, etc.
Note a few TV's can also get channels using a FIOS app. E.g. some Samsungs. I have my quest bedroom setup that way (qam and app) rather than bothering with a box.
Clarifying question: I have local channels using QAM TV tuner and currently receive HD on them (no STB). However another TV provider claims a STB will soon be required to receive HD (2014 timeframe). Can anyone verify whether this will be the case for FIOS? If so, when?
FIOS has no need to, but of course might decide to. The FCC made a ruling that allows cable companies, etc., to encrypt locals (previously they were not allowed to) IF they provide a free device to get such channels for two years.
If there is a move to encypt local channels there would have to be exceptions based on availability of over-air reception.
I thought that local providers must re-distribute local channels at a minimum for the national security alert system.
As said the FCC changed the rules. I don't think the EAS system had anything to do with it, BUt with all STB from cable/telcos/satellites, they do EAS differently and across all channels.
