what is the best way to connect the two.Currently I'm using a S cable and a split audio cable to the hauppauge wintv hvr 1250.Its far from great.I know it can be alot better.I've gotten tv shows from ...elsewhere and they play crystal clear on my desktops.

amazon and ebay with the search words hdmi video capture dpn't come up with anything less expensive than that card. you can maybe try froogle.com <~~googles product searc
and see if you can find it cheaper or go to pricewatch.com

Hubrisnxs - if you go coax from the STB to the TV Tuner Card, then you're not going to get HD/1080i. The STB will bottleneck the whole setup and you'll only get what the STB outputs via coax, i.e. 480i/mono SD. And if you connect the coax from the wall to the TV Tuner Card, then, well, you're just going to get the Clear QAMs.

ahhhh I see you are absolutely right. if he plugs into the stb he's going to get the SD Modulated RF (channel 3/4) 260-330 lines depending upon the quality of the modulator, and Comb Filter in the TV
S-Video Up to 400 lines (does not need a comb filter)
in order to get better picture quality he's going to have to get a better video card, that has HDMI or component outputs,
