FIOS TV Home Page

Not a good idea at all.

When I turn on my TV I know where I want to go and I don't need more advertisements from Verizon.  Heaven knows the service is costly enough that it doesn't need to be supplemented with ads.

It is bad enough that they hawk On Demand Movies and Internet Speed Upgrades, Home Security, etc. on the Channel Selection Menu.  Additionally, if for some reason I leave the room for a bit and turn the TV off and then come back in and want to get back to the live show I was watching as soon as possible, I now have this additional delay.

Definitely a dumb idea.

Dear Valued Verizon Customer,

At Verizon, we are always looking for the best new ways to enhance your FiOS® TV viewing experience. That's why we are particularly excited to announce our new FiOS TV Home Page.

The FiOS TV Home Page is a screen on your TV that will appear each time you turn on your Set Top box. Once the FiOS TV Home Page appears, you can navigate the screen using the arrows on your FiOS remote.

This is really a bad idea. Don't have it yet, but a good reason to get rid of Verizon. We get enough ads from Verizon on the internet. If you go to a website of a store you start getting ads from that store on the Verizon homepage or you get an ad from the company of the item you were looking at on that site. Doesn't Verizon make enough money with their charges for their bundles:  internet, phone, and TV ?

What you seem to be saying is that you are considering canceling your FiOS subscription because of a feature that you don't have, don't want, and haven't yet seen.  Are you sure this is a sound basis for making such decisions?

Incidentally if you take the time to study what's been proposed, you will note that there is a simple "one click" option to opt out of the screen and never see it again.  FWIW, I don't find it particularly useful either, but that's a far cry from dumping the service.

Actually its active on my set.  But did not default to on (perhaps because they defaulted it to same as one of my other choices).   And its not a simple one item to turn off.  If you hit that item all it tells you is that to turn it off select menu/ settings/ tv/ promostion disable.

If its active in your area you can pop up a copy to look at, without enabling it, from a new item in the menu.

Not something work Leaving FIOS for, but still rather dumb.  If you take the survey they included in the email, you will see they have a bunch of other dumb ideas for Improvement of this home page.

Actually the person who originally complained did not mention you could disable it. Usually when something new starts,it starts in one area of the country and is eventually put in all areas. I still think it's a bad idea and if it  can be disabled, I wonder how many customers will actually keep it. Of ourse, there might be some who actually like to view commercials.

From these forums, there seems to be many reasons to "jump ship" all of which have some validity!!!!

I too wasn't happy about the home page.

I called to get help shutting it off, unfortunately the person I talked to didn't seem to know what I was talking about and had me shut off some other promotional setting.

It does look like you can shut the Home Page off by going to:

Menu - Settings - TV- Promotions

Many thanks to "graling" for the hint about Promotions. After this useless Home Page started appearing on power-on, I went looking under Settings and could not find anything. But stumbled on Promotions and disabled it; I guessed it would stop the occasional 10-15 sec delay on DVR, when Verizon tries to hawk something. It looks like, at the moment, that that same configuration switch disables this Home Page nonsense. And amazingly, it makes sense!! All the Home Page does is give Verizon another way to hawk on-demand and subscription upgrades.

Also, I had the same experience as another poster, re: Tech Support. It appeared that Verizon decided not to train them on this.

This kind of in-your-face marketing is not IMHO a reason to abandon ship (for all I know, Comcast is more annoying). But it's a small additional reason why Americans loathe their cable providers. At least (for now) it appears Verizon had the wisdom to let us disable this thing.
