No,

I had Norton for years; then bought a new pc, had McAfee for a few weeks, then went to Microsoft SE. None had the problems you described.

ByTheWay,  MSE is free.

Check the settings of the AV software. It could be doing a complete scan on start up. Disable that feature. Run a complete scan, and then make sure you have on access protection set. I like Mcafee better then Norton. Is norton still alive? I know his name may live forever. JMO. On access protection may do that when checking each file, but it really should not slow things down on a good PC. It could be yours is new and needs some AV setting adjustments.

Ever since McAfee took over we have had many problems!  Yes, our computer is doing that now too. Do not like McAfee at all! Now we have also had our e-mail hacked into and it is sending out bogus messages to our friends. We have gotten ton's of spam that used to be blocked when Verizon used Radiopoint. Wish we could get them to change back. Called McAfee and spoke to a supervisor, and he said there isn't anything they can do.  I hate McAfee!

I think the "sit and spin" refers to McAfee periodically downloading fresh virus signatures - by what seems to be a very inefficient method.  I see no reason why anything I do has to be reduced to a crawl for as long as 45 minutes while McAfee hogs my system.  I don't think anything can be done about it except to try a different security company offering.  Slow-down during a scan is a different matter and a necessary evil, but scanning can be scheduled for off-hours.

McAfee's software has gone downhill since the 90s. These days it's basically considered bloatware when it comes down to their consumer software. I would personally use Avast!, Panda Cloud AV or Microsoft Security Essentials which are all free, and all of which use little resources.
