initiate migration to AOL Mail?

According to this help page:

Starting February 2017, Verizon will no longer provide verizon.net email service. Instead they will focus on providing their internet, TV and phone customers the best experience possible. Verizon has teamed up with AOL to provide verizon.net email customers with AOL Mail, an enhanced email experience.

Further, it states that:

When it is time for you to move your verizon.net mail to AOL Mail, you will be notified by an email from Verizon and messaging on webmail.verizon.com.

Prior to last week, the page listed the anticipated rollout date as "February 15. 2017", but now it's been changed to "February 2017".

Is there an way that I can manually initiate the migration to AOL Mail? I'd like to utilize AOL Mail's IMAP support for this account, and I'm kinda getting tired of waiting.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email. I've posted the issue on Mozillazine, the forums for Mozilla products.

Anyone else who's using TB can follow that thread or join that forum. The folks there DO NOT work for Mozilla. We're an independent user-to-user help forum. The members are savvy;  many are retired from or working in the IT industry.

I have read that many have received messages that their email accounts are going away soon.  I have not yet received such a message.  Is mine going away soon?  How can I find out when it will be shut down?

Lulu:

I'm in the same boat. I live in Fairfax (City), VA and have not received notification yet, or I may have deleted it accidentally. I called in to Verizon on Friday and was told that they will send up to two additional notices if you do not take action on the first one. I was also told that everyone in Fairfax would not be changed over at the same time - it's on an individual basis. I don't know how true any of this is, but I'm somewhat worried, like you.

Lulu, NOVA,

I live in DC.  Our geographic proximity may not mean anything due to the state lines, but the first e-mail announcing the need for me to migrate arrived on Monday 3/13.  A second e-mail came on Wednesday 3/15.  Both say that effective April 13, Verizon will no longer provide verizon.net e-mail service.

Further, when I sign into webmail.verizon.com, there is a new welcome page that announces the migration, gives you links to click to migrate to AOL or to other services.

I cannot speak for Verizon, but my guess is that if you have not received an e-mail and you don't see the new welcome screen, it's not your time yet.  After all a phased migration makes sense as it helps prevent help desks from being overloaded with questions.

My parents live in the same city as I and they received notice last week about switching their e-mail to AOL or another carrier. I have not received any noticed. If so I must have deleted it. Is this true? A lot of scams these days and want to make sure this is true. If so why are they doing this seems that people are having trouble with AOL. I never liked AOL and I am happy with the Yahoo/Verzon. How will I now when I am suppose to switch. My parents email said it was suppose to be in April. Although some people have posted it was suppose to happen in Feburary. What is true?

I've moved my account to AOL today.  Since my wife doesn't want hers switched for a couple of days, I wrote down notes for the transition.  Here are a few observations for those facing the migration.

  1. Clicking on the link in notification e-mail takes you to a simple sign up page
  2. On that page, you enter your name, e-mail address, new password, set up a security question (father's middle name, mother's maiden name sort of thing).  My existing password wasn't accepted, no reason why given.  If you can keep your existing, it will be easier.  Easily half of my time was spent changing passwords.
  3. I added a Recovery E-mail account, which required the recovery account to receive an e-mail and me to click a link in it before allowing me to proceed.  I don't know if the recovery e-mail account is mandatory or not.
  4. The password took a while to get into system, so I ended up having to change it again.
  5. If you use a smartphone you will need to change your password on it.  The iPhone has two places - under Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server
  6. Change your password in your mail software (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc)
  7. My very simple folder structure (all 3 folders) transferred over intact.
  8. I tried sending tests from my work account to home, home account to work, etc. for all accounts.  All worked.
  9. Spam and Blocked Senders
    1. My custom spam filters did not make it through the transition.
    2. My blocked senders did migrate with me.
    3. My safe senders did migrate with me.
    4. Curiously, the AOL Spam Filter caught one of the AOL "Welcome" e-mails.

On the whole it wasn't too bad.  The entire process took about 30 minutes.  While I would have preferred to spend that time doing something else, it wasn't as bad as has been imagined by some in the forum.

Good luck with your migrations!

BSlaydon1218:

Yes, they are migrating.  It appears that they are only moving some at any given point, so your parents having gotten an e-mail while you have not is quite feasible.  Read the thread above for more details.

Spanky 859:

They aren't cancelling your account, just moving it to use their AOL e-mail system.  You will be allowed to keep your verizon.net e-mail address if you want.

Please see the "initiate-migration-to-AOL-Mail?" thread for more details.

It's not going away, but Verizon is migrating the verizon.net e-mail accounts to the AOL Mail system.  You will be allowed to keep your verizon.net e-mail address if you want.

One more thought . . . Migrating makes this forum superfluous.  I will be gone soon.

Dave_NOVA -

Thanks for the information.  Very helpful!  I was getting ready to call myself -- "the dreaded Verizon call" -- and you have saved me the effort.  Looks like I just need to wait...

I migrated 1 of my 2 e-mail account to AOL.  What I noticed is I lost anything in my Drafts folder. All other folders seem fine.

Frustrating, as I'm not positive what was in there, but I know I had one draft I was working on it where it took my a long time to track down the e-mail address to send to, and since I was only going to use it once, I didn't write down or save that address anywhere else.  Now I have to track that e-mail address down again.

I apparently will have to check my 2nd e-mail account's Drafts folder before I transfer it to make sure there isn't anything I need in it.

For those who are opting to switch over to AOL, I created a userstyle that will remove all the annoying ads in AOL Webmail. It's compatible with Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera.

https://userstyles.org/styles/128796/aolmail-noads

Note: To use this, you'll need to install an extension called Stylish.

CostMoreForLess

The cost of the service keeps going up but now the service is less. Already cut cost by lowering what package we had but kept the basic items - now Fios is cutting the basic items - Is this the time to shop around????

Does anyone know how long you will be without email access when you migrate to AOL or another service provider?

Will our costs be lowered, since Verizon will no longer be the service provider?

I was without service for about 2 minutes.

johnnyzero2,

Thanks!  I will give this a try.  I hate ads.  Particularly in a service I am paying for!

Kudo to you!

Today 3/20, I get a notice that I need change to AOL (which I decided ages ago I didn't want) or lose service.  Yes I can go to gmail etc but why would they only give such short notice.  Looking at the forum it seems some folks got more warning.

Also my elderly mother is on verizon but with Yahoo.  Does this impact her account at all?

That's only for webmail.  Do you have something for Mozilla Thunderbird?
