Update: It seems secondary accounts from the original Verizon.net email are the ones being affected. The AOL SMTP server appears to be changing the addressing of the clients and shifting it to Yahoo. Even after manually changing it, deleting the account from Outlook 2016 completely, removing it as an account in Windows, etc. (yes, cleared cache files, etc.), still the change occurs. Only logical item left since the Primary email address works and so do other email services in my client, AOL's mail service.
I have done this for two email accounts that have primary and secondary email addresses. Only the secondary stopped working this week.
No help is provided at all from AOL or Verizon.

My Apple email client has the same issue with the SMTP request failing by timing out after 2 min. I'm beginning to think the problem may lie with verizon servers.

All of the bugs I was experiencing were resolved by changing the account settings from POP to IMAP.

I noticed you had changed from POP to IMAP to get your emails to work. My laptop is set for IMAP and my desktop is set to POP. Both stopped receiving on March 28th at 9:44 PM. Same last email on both computers were the same.
This whole situation is beyond rediculous.

My smartphone and two Microsoft Surface units are set for imap and they haven't had any access issues for quite a while. 🙂
Spam emails being sent to my verizon.net account....that's another story. 😠

I have multiple email accounts at AOL in the verizon.net domain. They have worked fine for years with both Outlook on Windows 10 and BlueMail under Android.
Today, one of the accounts at AOL began rejecting logins, with Outlook reporting 0x800CCC92 and BlueMail failing silently.
The other account works.
I've Googled this, and anything specific to Outlook (e.g. too large a .pst file) is pretty much ruled out, since AOL is rejecting both clients.
Any ideas?

I would just like to say "thank you"! I had not had any problems with my email client until January 4th when emails stopped loading. I added my account to 2 other email clients and couldn't get them to load. Then I came across this forum. I don't remember ever receiving any info about a 3rd party password, but it worked. As soon as I used it the emails started pouring in. Thank you all again!

From what I read the password is good in your email client until you disconnect it from aol or delete the program, etc. Then you would have to set up a new one. You continue to use your actual password when logging on to aolmail. This is just a behind the scenes password in the account setup of your email client.

OK so happy I found others with the same issue. Everything was working fine and on Christmas eve, everything stopped my phone, my computer nothing gets email. I log into AOL and it works just fine. I have tried IMAP and POP settings and nothing is working. Has anyone resolved this?

After several hours on AOL help phone lines and several password changes, i got transferred to a tech who knew what he was doing, although I needed to relinquish control of my screen to his remote computer to let him set up a new account. One issue was that an explicit SMTP prefix was now required for verizon.net for the outgoing email server (this was not explicitly required until these new changes -many other issues too). Good luck dealing with AOL.

Can you share the "explicit SMTP prefix?" I have 2 Verizon (AOL) email accounts. One is working fine. The other is working on my PC but, suddenly yesterday, not on my 2021 iPad Pro. I restarted the iPad. I deleted the email account and reentered it. I reentered with the non-manual AOL option. I got an assortment of pop-up messages, e.g., cannot send mail user's name or password is incorrect; sender's address was invalid; IMAP server pop.verizon.net is not responding. After spending the day trying things and being crazy with this, incoming mail started to work, not in response to anything I did! But outgoing is still not working: "The connection to the outgoing server 'SMTP' failed." Is there any way to reconfigure the SMTP to make it work? Or if I was stupid enough not to change my Verizon email when it became AOL, then I either have patience until it "fixes itself" or I go through the laborious process of notifying all contacts that my email has changed. Suggestions for : 1) best way to contact an actual AOL person for help; and 2) best email provider to switch to?

By explicit I meant: SMTP.verizon.net . My original account setting was just verizon.net for the SMTP server and relied on the Apple email client to provide the SMTP which apparently stopped working. The ultimate fix for that and other problems appears to be getting a new password generated by AOL via their account security login settings page.
