Google Pixel XL and VZM Msg app

I have the Google Pixel XL.  Using the Verizon Messaging app.  Why is it that the app doesn't show an unread message count on the widget?

Are you using the app icon or the actual widget?  The app icon does not show the count, but if you long press an open area on your homescreen, then choose "widgets" at the bottom, find the Messages+ widget and add THAT, you should get the count.  (It looks just like the app icon ... confusing!)
