Not receiving texts

I've talked to multiple people over the past two days, and I haven't received any of their texts.  They checked their phones, and the message status is 'Sent'.  I restarted my phone (Google Pixel) and am able to receive texts again.  But, the previous messages never came through?  Is there any way to recover the messages I may have missed?  I frequently use texts to schedule appointments with clients.  Any idea why I might be experiencing this problem?  I'm in an area with excellent coverage (at least according to the bars on my phone.

Thos01,

That's definitely odd and we want to ensure that you're receiving your messages. While you may not be able to recover the messages we can certainly look to determine what may be going on. Prior to your current device did you have an iPhone? What messaging application are you using? You mentioned that this has been only going on the past two days. Have there been any changes since this started such as new apps, app updates, software updates, or even damage?

Thank you for the reply. I did not receive text messages between the

afternoon of Wednesday, Jan 25th and the afternoon of Saturday, Jan 28th.

I was alerted to the problem by my wife who sent messages that I never

received. I verified that other people had sent me texts that I never

received. Further, I checked the message details on their phones, and it

showed that the message was successfully sent. Texts that I sent did go

through to these people, so it was only a problem with receiving texts.

My wife is also a Verizon customer (on the same account), and she

discovered the same problem (not receiving texts) for a period of days

during this same window in late January. Once I restarted my phone (a

brand new Google Pixel), I was able to receive texts again. My wife has a

different phone, a Droid Turbo.

This problem recurred this morning. I was getting texts last night, but my

wife's texts did not go through to me this morning. Once again, I

restarted my phone and was able to receive texts again. Another service

problem (that may or may not be related) is that I had a missed call from

my in-laws yesterday. I did not get an alert for a Voicemail until I

restarted my phone today.

I have never had an iPhone. My previous phone was a Droid Maxx. I did not

install any new apps that coincided with the time windows of missed texts.

It's possible that apps were updated (as this often happens in the

background whenever I'm connected to wi-fi). No software updates were

installed during these windows, nor is there any physical damage to my

phone. I'm using the default "Messenger" app that came pre-installed on my

phone (not the "Message+" app). The operating system is Android 7.1.1.

Thank you for looking into this problem. I was hoping that it was just a

one-time problem, but the fact that it happened again this morning is

troubling. I'm thinking that this is not a phone-specific issue as my wife

experienced the same problem on a different phone.

Regards,

Thomas

Does your wife or the other people who didn't have their messages received by your phone use the Verizon Messages+ application? There has been an issue with that application in the last couple of days. While your issue might have occurred before that time period, it might be related. One of the ways around the Verizon Messages+ application issues is to uninstall the application to the factory version and disable it so that the phone defaults to the manufacturer's text messaging application that is also pre-installed. For the DROID Turbo, it was called Messaging and I think had a blue icon.

Is the Verizon Messages+ application installed on your phone? You could uninstall it to verify it wasn't interfering with the other Messenger application.

I have had multiple issues with my texting as well. 2 days ago I was not recieving messages from people. This occurred right after the update. So then this morning, my phone reset itself to factory setting. Downloaded thousands of messages that were previously deleted. I was using the Samsung app to text. Now I have to have both apps up the Samsung and Verizon to get and send text messages. I have to keep switching back and forth. What is the fix for this issue? Its really frustrating.

Last night through this morning was the third occurrence of this problem in the past 3-4 weeks.  I just uninstalled Verizon's Message+ app (even though this is not the app that I had been using for texts).  I'll keep you updated on whether this seems to resolve the issue.

Can someone at Verizon confirm whether their Message+ app interfered with other messaging apps?  In particular the Google Messenger app in my case, or the Samsung messaging app in missygirl921's case?

If you are not interested in using the Verizon Messages application, I would suggest that you disable it and turn off notifications in the application info screen so it doesn't bug you to keep updating it.

I disabled the Verizon Messages app a couple of weeks ago on both my own phone and my wife's phone.  This problem recurred for me today. Further, my wife stopped receiving texts a couple of days ago.  The problem is always resolved when we restart our phones. Neither of us had ever experienced this problem until I renewed my contract in early January.

Do you have any other ideas?  Text messaging is a fundamental service that needs to be reliable.  How do you suggest resolving it?

I have been having the same issue for the last week. I also have a google Pixel and I first noticed on 3.1.17 that I had not been receiving messages from one individual. She had tried to contact me the prior day and I didn't receive the message ever.  The next day she informed me in person of this message so I tried texting her first, she replied, and that seemed to resolve the issue permanently. I haven't have a problem with it again until today when my mom (who is on the same plan as me) asked me if I received her text this afternoon which I did not.  I called google and spoke to someone who looked at all my setting and told me everything looked good.  I can't seem to figure out what is wrong here but I'm worried that there are more messages I'm missing that I just haven't figured out yet.

I'm having the same issue....for the 2nd time with my Google Pixel.

I first had the issue back in November, contacted VZW they had me reset my phone and do some other troubleshooting.  I know the text messages are being sent to my phone #, as I can see them on web.vma.vzw.com but they aren't delivered to my phone.

It is random as far as the texts I receive or don't receive.  They are from different people on different phones (iPhone users sending via iMessage and android users using multiple messaging apps).  Also I would get some texts but not all from people.  My wife would send me 4 texts thoughout the day and I would get the 1st, 2nd and 4th, but not the 3rd.  That kinda stuff.

Anyways, the issues is back.  Yesterday I did not receive a text from my wife, but sure enough it was on web.vma.vzw.com.  Called VZW and they had me reset my network settings, and did something on their end.  We will see if it makes a difference.  They also asked me to use Messages+ to test it out (which I have NEVER used).

Also keep in mind this is my 3rd pixel device, the 1st two I received were defective.  I also recently went to the new unlimited plan.  So this issue has persisted across 3 devices and 2 different service plans with VZW.

And I NEVER had an issue with texts before this, over 15 years of being on VZW....

Thanks burgler2112 for that link!!! I had seen that there was an update to Verizon Messenger last week that supposedly stopped it from interfering with 3rd party apps. It worked for about a week (the longest I had to go without a restart) and finally today glitched out again. I checked the link you provided, and I just looked back and saw the message I was waiting for from today, and several text messages I've missed over the past few months

Incidentally, I don't know if it's consequence or not, but that web link only takes me as far back as January which is when I started having the problems. I don't know if that has to do with this or if that's just the cutoff for having the messages online. In either case, I think Verizon has some explaining to do.

Does that link give you access to the text messages you have not received?  (As in you can actually read the contents of the message? )

I've been looking for an app or some kind of work around for this issue.  I have been not receiving random texts (or texts get cut off) for about a year. I can't tell if it's my phone or the network or what is going on.

If I can view all my messages through that link that would solve all my problems!

I am having this problem too. Mainly missing texts from one person. Now not sure if it is more. It is a sporadic thing and I get one they send but not the next.  It seems to be when there is a group text (as mms message). Will deactivating and reactivating the sim card fix this permanently or is it just a possible temporary fix like restarting the phone?

I want to make sure that your issue is properly resolved, jhardy93, so you can enjoy your device. How long has this issue been going on? Have you tried powering your device off, removing and reinserting the SIM Card?

I'm having the same exact issue described. Spent 2 hours on the phone with both Google and Verizon who proceeded to blame one another. Was told by Verizon that my service would be "investigated" locally and that they'd follow up with me which they never did. I have a Google Pixel XL using Textra, never owned an iPhone and never will.

ImBen,

We can relate to how important your messages are. Let's look into this. What happens when you use the preinstalled texting app and message your own number? How long has this been a concern? What steps have you tried?

It appears that the majority of the time this issue arises is when I go into and then out of coverage or lose service for whatever reason. Once this happens I won't get any text messages or calls at all until I either toggle airplane mode or restart my phone. When this does initially happen and I notice I'll send a text to myself and not receive a response. Then I'll toggle airplane mode, send another message and then everything else pushes through and updates. I have tried resetting my network settings already. I have tried excluding apps from Doze, updating my device, the most recent thing I did was uninstall Verizon Messenger which was installed but not in use. This has been happening on and off over the last few months but a lot more recently. Verizon looked and claimed everything looked good and was working on their end. I'm using a brand new Google Pixel XL.

Hi there, ImBen. I know how much of a nuisance this kind of issue could be. To confirm, are you using the preinstalled messaging app? (Not Verizon Messages). You mentioned that it often happens when you return from an area with lesser signal. During these times, are you able to successfully use data or make calls?

I'm not currently using the preinstalled messaging app, I'm using Textra. This issue doesn't appear to be isolated to a particular messaging app as it also effects incoming phone calls. During these times I am able to successfully use data, or at least it appears that way but I may also be connected to wifi. I am able to make calls, I find that making a call is one of the things that will trigger a fix for the issue besides sending a a text after toggling airplane mode. However I am not able to receive a call during this time period though. The only time I realize that this issue is occuring is when I go to send a text and it won't send or if I haven't received any texts for an extended period of time.
