I have many ringtones for my contacts on previous Note4. When I try to assign a tone to a contact on the PixelXL, it will still use the default. I have tried using the method suggested by Google. Is there a different method for the same phone on VZW?

Try using a third party app such as Zedge. Android 7 has an odd way to register sound files to stuff in general. It's just all changed a bit here and there. Zedge Has worked for me.
I have Pixel XL.

Go to Contacts on your phone, then find the contact you want to set a ringtone ... tap the three dots to the right of the pencil icon .. then Set ringtone. From there you should be able to set a ringtone for that contact only. It works on my Pixel - what happens on yours?

Thanks SuzyQ. It doesn't work. The contact's ringtone changes in the
menu. But when the contact calls, it still makes the default ringtone.
We noticed that we had an old version of Contacts so we upgraded it.
Still, it doesn't work.
We are clueless!

That's what has worked on my Pixel - and my husband's. Most of our contacts do use the default, but we have a couple (like each other) where we have a specific ringtone when that person calls. It works this way on ours, and I'm not sure why it isn't on yours.
I use the Zedge app to find and download ringtones, and when I go to set a ringtone for a contact it brings up the Zedge app. Try it ? You can find tons of free ringtones ...

My good friend also got a pixel xl, but he got his through Google, not
Verizon, and setting up individual ringtones works on his.
I even tried using one of the built-in ringtones and no go.
Thanks for thinking about it with me.

That's really odd - both of our phones were purchased through Verizon at a corporate store on the buy one, get one half off deal in early November. Have you tried Zedge?
