My new Google Pixel XL tells me it has no SIM card. Is this a problem? If so, how can I remedy it?

Your phone requires an active SIM card for access to VzW's network.  Is there an active SIM card in the phone?  If so, turn off the phone and remove the SIM card for a minute or two.  Once you reinsert the SIM card and turn the phone back on, give it time to establish a fresh network connection.  If that doesn't help, you might have a bad SIM card; you can get a replacement free at your local Corporate VzW store or by contacting Customer Service.
