Contact Conundrum: Friend Calls But Number is Associated with Another Friend

A strange thing happened on my wife's Pixel.  A friend (friend number one), who my wife hasn't seen in about five years,  called her and left a message saying she wanted to catch up.  She didn't leave her number because who does that anymore, right?  My wife called the number associated with the voicemail message, which was the same number in the "Recent calls" list, and a completely different friend (friend number two) on her contact list answered.  Friend number two said she didn't call and hadn't seen friend number one for years.  My wife looked up friend number two's number in her contact list and it was a different number than the one she just called.  She looked up friend number one, and it was the same number she replied to but friend number two picked up.  She called and texted the number associated with the contact info for friend number two, and friend number two answered.  She tried texting the number in the contact list for friend number one, and again, friend number two replied.  Neither my wife nor her friends are known spammers, so spoofing is not the answer.   lol.  Any ideas?

That is very strange, indeed. Your best option might be to post on the dedicated Pixel Help community at:  https://support.google.com/pixelphone/community?hl=en

I don't think there are a lot of Pixel users here on the Verizon forums. The dedicated Pixel Help community is full of very knowledgeable Pixel phone users and experts.

That is definitely strange. Where are her contacts stored, locally or as Google contacts? If stored as Google contacts try deleting both contacts and then re-adding them one at a time from https://contacts.google.com/ on a computer and then sync contacts with the phone app.

Yes, Google Contacts. I'll try that and report back.  Thanks

Tried it. Same result. Very bizarre.

The last time I heard about numbers getting crossed like this was when I was a small child decades ago, and something with the landline service got messed up where people trying to call the neighbors were instead getting my parents' home.  My parents figured it out and told everyone to call their home number if they wanted to get the neighbors and to call the neighbor's number if they wanted to speak with someone in our house!  I guess some switching gadget is haywire?
