Got a Pixel 7a a few days ago (love it) and left a couple of test voice mails from another phone but the messages do not exist when I attempt to retrieve them via *86 or Visual VM. Is there a setting I need to change or do I have to call Verizon? Thanks in advance.

If you opened the Phone app > Voicemail tab and setup voicemail on your new phone using the Phone app and they do not appear there it sounds like a Verizon account issue. I would call Verizon tech support and see if they can help. Did you use a new SIM and not swap the SIM from old phone to new phone? After years of doing that I learned with my Pixel 7P that process is not recommended anymore and can lead to account issues.

We want to make sure that you are getting the voice messages you need. Is the visual voicemail app up to date? What kind of device did you have before this device? ~Peter

There is no Visual Voicemail app on Pixel phones. Voicemail is built into the Phone app, it's a tab at the bottom of the Phone app screen.
