changing carrier but trying to keep number

Hi so im trying to change over to a different carrier i want to cancel my verizon plan becuase my new phone would be coming a few days after the month and i dont want to pay the $40 for the two days i would be using verizon so I gues my question is that can I transfer my number on to my new phone even though i am going to cancelling my plan with verizon? Like do they immidetly erase the number and make it impossible to transfer?
