My response to whether the Palm is a good phone:
I had major issues with it also!
For being an Smartphone, it is really DUMB! Run, don't walk away from it. I had 5 phones in the last 5 months, and they all had problems. Issues ranged from shutting down, audio problems, battery draining within an hour and being useless when you really needed it.
My first phone lasted 31 days, and the fun then started. I spent many hours on the phone with verizon technical support and they always tried to tell me it was a network problem. My fifth phone actually was activated 24 hours before it decided it didn't want to work anymore. No signal, bar code, internet connection, nothing. Booting and pulling the battery did nothing. Got on the phone AGAIN with verizon and within 45 minutes of working with them, the phone died and it was charged before calling.
This was my first smartphone and I was very impressed with what the PALM was suppose to do. Yah right, it's been the biggest headache of my life. I really feel that Palm needs to pull the phone as it does not live up to it standards. Because of all the issues, I really never got to fully utilized this phone...
Also, compared to other smartphones, this phone is wimpy......
What significant OS changes? When can we expect it?
In the version 1.4.5 update, you will be able to play all 3D, PDK games, PDK apps etc.., enable apps ported from iOS etc... and are supposed to get stability/battery improvement updates. VZW is taking forever to send us this update. The Pixi Plus users were lucky yesterday/today to get the update.
For the WebOS 2.0 version, you can see the list here:
The webOS is, in my opinion, bar none, the best mobile operating system I have used. I have two ipods including an iOS4 iPod Touch 64GB, but the webOS is much much more fun to use and user friendly. I would suggest you follow the PreCentral "How to" articles for all the user guides.
With the 2.0 version, others can probably barely catchup. I know Android is the king with VZW but I have used three Android devices extensively over the last 4 months and other than the hardware speed, everything else is so so for me. The OS is not intuitive to use. I see the radical speed improvements with the Froyo (Android 2.2) update, but the interface is still clunky.
About the other user who wanted to know about the smartphone/PDA features, webOS has multiple exchange account support - you can sync to Outlook calendar/mail/contacts, Google Calendar/Gmail/Contacts (probably Google Tasks but I haven't used the feature from Google yet), use a toodledo account/sync for tasks (using the toodles app), use basecamp for project sync etc.. I can't say enough about all the features.
About the batteries concern of another user, the 22.214.171.124. update improved the battery life drastically for me. But all the smartphone devices I have had the battery problem. I used the Droid Incredible for two weeks and the battery lasted an hour and a half and was down to 20%. I had to turn off all radios to have a useful 6-7 hours out of it (I am sure recent updates would have improved it but this was my experience). Sorry for rambling but I had to say this given the venting going on in this thread.
