Badges (number) alerts for email???

I can get badges (number) alerts and even notifications at the top of my screen for text messages.  Why can I not get the same for emails?  I have gmail.  Would that have something to do with the problem?

I have never seen a number on the Gmail icon with a HTC phone for new emails. It was only on the "Mail" app.

I saw it once when I first added my email on my phone.  Now, I don't see anything?
