GPS worse after update

I use GPS almost daily and I was having issues with it before the update.  Main issue was not getting a lock.

After the update yesterday, I am beginning to think the performance is worse.  Just now I was unable to get a lock in Google maps after driving about 10 miles.

Anyone else?

I am having the same problem.  Any app that requires my location isn't working properly.  This is amazing.  Verizon should not be having these problems.

I would suggest completing a Factory Reset. This resolves many minor issues like the one you described with the GPS locator. Resetting the phone deletes all data, including downloaded applications, and resets the phone back to its initial state—(the state before you turned on the phone for the first time). Make sure to back up important data you have on the phone before you reset your device. Please follow the steps below to complete the reset:

  1. From the home screen, touch Menu
  2. Touch Settings
  3. Touch SD & phone storage
  4. Touch Factory data reset
  5. Tap Reset phone
  6. Tap Erase everything

Sorry, but there should be NO REASON to have to reboot the phone and LOSE all the information you've already added to your phone just to get an update to work...this is crazy!

Actually ChaunceyM_VZW is giving you a good suggestion, there is many reasons a hard reset is something you sould concider after you complete any firmware update or fix..

1. Update can modify kernal, settings, system files and other files that developers of 3rd party apps havent tested.

2. The update has been tested on the stock build of os and not a modified version that you have customized.

3. There in no way to verify update didnt purge data that 3rd perty apps used before update.

4. Some files that gets over ride cant be changes ro updted files sometimes because of a untested app has blocked access.

A hard reset is a good ideal to try and ig you backup data and apps you wont have to fear loosing any of personal items.

A number of Droid X users felt the way you do but after they completed the reset they learned that a app that was installed was causing the issue.

Verizon is experiencing GPS outages in the East Texas area. Location apps with not work without a fixed GPS location. Resetting your phone will not work if you fall into the coverage area affected. This is a known issue caused by the conversion of Alltel towers to Verizon towers during the month of April. Verizon engineers do not have a resolution date.

Search for the thread called "VZ Navigator and GPS Not working in East Texas" to learn more.

I noticed that your location is Houston, Texas. You might be in the affected area.

Good point but I noticed the the other reported users show in Illinois and New York and I am not sure if they fall under the outage..

Understood, but someone shouldn't have to go through this hassle just to get an update to work correctly.

This would be nice to believe, but in the programming world this isnt always correct.....   Think about all OS out there (Desktop and Mobile), mostly all of them requires a reboot to access files that the system is using and cant be accessed and under some situation, like Windows SP1 and SP2 some application stops working and requires a reload of the apps and this is because of it was blocking the update from completing..

This isnt much of a diffrent situation when a OS is updated to fix a bug, this usually means the programming code is flawed and required it to be replace and when this happend issues are bound to happen.

Hard resetting usually resolves and minimize these issues..

Wildman,

I have been a level 3 service engineer (level 4 is R&D) for the last 10 years and have never had to do, or suggest the field engineer do a "hard reset" after install of a firmware or software update to the 13 functional units (essentially 12 computers controlled by the 13th) . Soft reset, OK, but never where the end user is forced to reconfigure and reload unique software as if starting from day one. If Microsoft or Apple had their customers hard resetting after install of update in the percentage Verizon support promotes computing would not be as accepted as it is.

Rob - thanks for putting my thoughts into better words - as I type this, my TBolt just finished rebooting itself - how disappointing.

Well I don't expect to have to go to such extreme measures either.  But I just want my device to work, and I'm tech savvy enough to do it.

VZW support protocol is

1. Battery pull

2. Factory reset

3. Replace device

4. If that doesn't work go back to step #1

I'm on my third step #4.....
