HTC One battery life after update to 4.4.2

Ever since the update to Android 4.4.2 the battery life on my HTC One has gone right down the tubes.  Once the update completed, I do a clean reinstall - deleting everything, and let the update reinstall.  Battery life when I go to bed is in the 80% - when I get up I'm getting a warning that it's hitting 14% and needs to be charged.  There are no phone calls, no text messages, nothing.  So I reinstalled again - again deleting everything - and didn't reinstall any apps.  I even turned off Blinkfeed and "disabled" a bunch of stuff that was automatically loaded.  Battery life still sucks - I wake up in the morning to the warning that the battery has hit 14% and needs to be cabled.

What is going on?  Battery life before the update was okay - now it absolutely sucks.  Anyone else having this problem?

jaybirdhawaii,

You should be enjoying your HTC ONE and the added benefits  that come from the software update; it's our goal to get you there. Please go to Settings>Backup & Reset>Erase all content again; once you have restored it, don't restore your information that is backed up to your accounts, just set it up as new. Test it again, if problems persist, please reply with the Software number located in Settings>About>Software Information.

I have the same problem with the battery life after the last Verizon OTA software update on Feb 18th. The battery life on my HTC One is terrible now. Maybe it's about half of what it used to be before the update.

I'm not sure why anyone needed a clean install though? My phone just updated and all data and setting were still there. (Well most of them anyway).

My software is Android version 4.4.2 and software number 3.11.605.1. HTC Sense version is 5.5.

When I check what apps are sucking down the battery it is the HTC Sense app at 25% and HTC Services is 10%.

So what changed to made the battery life about half in this recent update?

annaha, it sounds like you've had a difficult time on your device eversince you downloaded the latest software update. Let's see what we can do to ease your frustrations. Did you backup all of your pictures, contacts and media files at Backup Assistant? http://vz.to/WNJMeV  If so, then you can access our website to view your saved media.

The 12 month warranty covers your device for manufacturer defects. We can provide you with the same make/model phone that you currently have or you may ship your device to HTC to have it repaired which takes 4-6 weeks. However, if you choose to switch to a new device, then you would be provided with the Edge program option http://vz.to/17nFkEt We want you to have the best wireless experience possible. I hope that this information addresses your concerns.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. Would you send me a new phone or a refurbished

one? I would like a new phone. And since this is a manufacturer's defect

and others are having the same problem, I am not sure if a new phone will

work any better than the one I have. It is a new phone.

annaha, great question! The manufacturer warranty does allow us to replace the device with a certified like new replacement of the same make and model. The option to repair the device directly with HTC will allow you to keep the same device you have now. Of course, moving to Verizon Edge will allow you to get a brand new phone of a different make and model.

Please let us know how you would like to proceed.

What I don't understand is that before the update the battery life of the

phone was fine. With my normal use it lasted almost two days. Now it needs

charging every day at least once. This is not the phone I bought! My 4-yr

old phone lasted longer than this! Everyone is telling me this is normal.

This is not normal for a brand new phone with the minimal usage I have. I

want Verizon to make an exception in my case. I had the phone for 3 weeks

before all these problems started. You give 2 weeks. If it had not been for

the Kit Kat update that was mandatory, this phone would work just fine. And

the "Ultra" pixels do not make up for mega pixels. Pictures are awful.

annaha,

We certainly regret to hear of the issues your device has been experiencing since the last software update. Due to the manufacturers warranty policy, we are only able to replace the device with another of the same model which would be a certified like new replacement. Since this is a manufacturers policy, we are unable to make an exception for a brand new replacement unless a new device is purchased.

Today is July 17, 2014.  I've had my HTC One (m8) for a month or so and have been pleased with the battery life - usually having to charge it once overnight and even then it's usually still over 25%.

This morning I unplugged it from the charger and it immediately went to 98%, and steadily down until now, 5 hours later, the battery is as 12%!  I checked the software version and notice that it's 4.4.2, but what I don't know is whether the phone already had this version when I bought it or if it just now downloaded.   This would seem to be the case, given the sudden and dramatic loss of battery power.

So - what do I do?  I tried the suggested process as described in post #46, but when I got to step #5, "volume up, power on" the phone powered up to the home screen and there was no signal!  So the only thing I could think of to do was a factory reset and now I've spent 2 hours playing with my phone and the batter is now down to 10%!

It seems obvious to me that this is a software issue, and I'm getting really, really tired of it, as it has happened before with previous Android updates!  If this doesn't get resolved soon, I'm headed for T-Mobile.

Please read my notes on this problem. It's tricky but you'll get there.

Just came across this board, would greatly appreciate any assistance. I have an M7, running 4.4.3. No extra launchers, background animations, etc. My battery behavior is as follows from a full 100% charge:

  • Doing nothing, it will drain ~1% every couple minutes, and be down to 80% in about 30 mins.
  • Past this point:
    • Taking a 'major' action like making a 5 minute phone call or taking a single photo, often kills the battery and shuts the phone off.
    • Texting and light web browsing (no video) is ok until the battery gets to somewhere between 50-70%. The phone will shut off somewhere in that range.
  • If I plug my phone in, the battery will show 0-1% charge. Battery can drop to 0% from anywhere between 50-75%.
  • Using the original HTC charger seems to drain my battery rather than charge it, as it drops 1% very slowly, ie - every 10 mins or so.
  • I've tried this tactic to fix battery. Helped me last past 80%. Prior to this, my battery would die at 80%.

What do you suggest?

Thanks!

I agree, I don't get it.  Verizon is the ONLY carrier that has not updated its HTC M7.  I would like to know what the hold up is and why they choose to wait?

Waiting-

We understand that updates are exciting because of the enhancements that come with the new software.  I apologize, but we don't have a specific date for the software release.  You can stay current with news any time here at http://bit.ly/n5snpq.

Interesting... we got the HTC One update to 4.4.2, did NOT do a delete and install, just let it install ... and see little to no battery change.

When you look at Settings >> Power >> Usage, what are the top apps using your battery?

I am having the same problem, my battery is lasting about half the amount it was before the update.

There are a few other quirks that I've found to be extremely annoying.

I was very happy with my phone, So far I am not a fan of the update.. Solutions please?

Hi norrco - Let's bring back the power! What is the average battery life that you are seeing now? When checking Settings>Battery, what is using the majority of the battery life?

Thank you,

Hello YaleK_VZW..!

It seems to be different based on what I have been using the phone for.. It can show "messages" at 27% or "facebook" at 29%..etc.. But the bottom line is when I do "use" the phone (meaning the screen is on) I can literally watch the battery percentage drop while I'm using the phone.. I work 12 hour shifts, before the update the battery would easily last the entire shift, now I have to plug my phone in every 4 hours or so.. Ridiculous..

I deleted most of the apps on my phone tonight to see if there may have been a conflict with one of them..

We'll see how it goes.. Any suggestions?

What the heck are you using the phone for that the battery usage levels on those applications are in the 20-30% range?

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.
