HTC Running Slow and Receiving Messages Slow

When trying to send a message it takes forever to send and it was never like that before. The screen says please wait for at least a minute so I have to sit to wait to reply. My google market app is not updating and I'm pretty sure my phone is not up to date. Can someone please help with this issue?

Let's speed up your phone GabzMoMo! First, please dial *228 option 2 and reboot your phone. Please clear out some of your SMS threads. If the SMS memory is low, it may make the messages send slowly.
