Mobile Connection Problems

I have had the Thunderbolt for a week now and pretty much returning it today to get an iPhone 4.  I live in an area which is not covered by 4g but 4g is available around 7 miles from my house.  When I get home at night and head to bed I am still able to use data service but on a 3g network.  When I wake up in the morning I am not able to connect to any data service (I get a message saying no network detected or use Wifi).  I check the wireness connection and under Mobile Connection it either says "turning on" or "connection failed".  It never changes from this status.  The only way I can get my Thunderbolt to connect is by restarting the phone.  This is very problem-matic.  Today is a cloudy wet day and I have not even been able to get a 3g signal where there is usually 4g service.  My blackberry was much better for the internet.  Anyone else having these types of 4g to 3g switch problems?

Tomorrow will be a week since I recd my Tbolt and I am having the same exact problem as you ...replaced it once but same result, which indicates its a network issue. Some say they have no issue, but I am covered by 4G where ever I go according to the coverage map, yet, I cannot keep data connectiivity for more than a few minutes at a time.

What helped me was downloading an app called "Phone Info". Download the app, go into PHONE INFO, scroll down and change network type to CDMA only ...this will prevent your device from accessing 4G and helps with the consistency of the data connection. Its worked for me up til this morning, only because Verizon is now saying there is a 4G outage and now I cannot even get 3G.

Try and get on WIFI as much as possible until Verizon resolves the data issue

yeah, this phone and the ever so famous 4G connection are nothing but huge jokes.. rarely, very rarely works.. at home, work, gym, grocery store, park, anywhere... im extremely disappointed with it, and will return it tomorrow for an iPhone 4 w/ at&t.. had enough of this verizon mess.. people, definitely stay away from this piece of cr.., it jumps around like a squirrel from 3G to 1x, to nothing, never hitting the elusive 4G spot... bunch of nerds that thought its that easy to hit the spot, keep working on it guys.. Im gone!

I'm having the same problem, I got my TB on Tues then Wed the outage and now I have to constantly reboot or shut down my data connection and restart. Turning on WiFi doesn't work because when I can't connect to 3G I can't connect to WiFi for some reason until I reset the data connection.

I don't know if it's the same issue as the rest of you or I have a bad handset.

May I ask have you done the software update on your Thunderbolt? Some of the symptoms that it resolves does include the data connectivity. The software update is being rolled out in stages effective 5/3. You can manually check for the update on your device by going to

Settings > About phone > System updates

Hope this helps and good luck.

I am using LTE onoff app from the market. This app allows you to turn the 4G off and turn 3G on whenever there is no 4g service.

Battery life is improved
